We are going to learn how to find the area of a fraction of the circle or a pizza slice.
This is called sector area and we are going to be working in degrees today.
So we have a section of a circle that is 60 degrees and the radius is 8 and we have the
formula the measure over 360 times pi r squared and that is the formula we are working with.
The first two pieces of information we need to draw from the picture are the measure of
the angle and the radius.
So in this problem we have a measure of 60 degrees and we have a radius of 8.
So we need to define those two variables that are in the equation.
Now we are just going to plug them in.
So I'm going to take 60 over 360 because that is my measure and that actually reduces to
1 6th of the circle.
So I actually like to go ahead and reduce that down to 1 6th and that is times our pi
times the radius squared.
So I'm going to plug in my 8 here.
8 squared is 64 so I'm going to take 8 squared and put 64 pi as the area and then I'm just
taking 1 6th of that.
So when I multiply across remember I put a 1 under my whole number and multiply top and
top and the bottom and the bottom and then I can just reduce that so I can take a 2 out
of each one of those and that becomes 32 over 3 so it is 32 pi over 3 and that would
be in whatever unit inches squared because that is area.
