There was a scholar named Wei Dan in the Tang Dynasty. He was already 40 years old but still could not pass the Imperial Examinations. One day, when he was riding a lame donkey across a bridge in Luoyang, he saw a fisherman caught a huge turtle several feet long. The turtle was put on the bridge, evidently dying. Many people came to watch it and talked about buying it and making some delicious dishes. Wei Dan felt compassion and asked the fisherman how much he would sell it for. The fisherman said 2,000 qian, equal to $200.
