Forced to Shelter - Camping in a Snowstorm - Heavy Rain and Winds

All right, we're leaving the car. It's coming in. There's big raindrops coming down and it's about seven degrees Celsius It's cold. It's a bit of a breeze in the air and it's supposedly snowing at 1,300 meters above sea level and that's where I'm going. I'm actually going to 1,450. So it's gonna be rough and cold up there I've got the waterproofs on so I only get sweaty, but I just can't get critically cold But it's about five or six hundred meters elevation straight up We've got to pitch the tent and survive But wish me luck guys. This one's gonna be brutal starting to slate Temperatures dropping as they get higher elevation. It's definitely snowing up there. I can see it It's really coming in now hmm I'm eating some lollies. It's giving me energy When I break out of the trees, it's gonna be interesting to see what's really going on. There's a bit of wind movement Hopefully the gusts don't pick up too brutal. The sideways snow, when you're wet, it's a lethal combination People have died up on this ridge Unfortunately, but that's just what it's like. It's a risky place if you're unprepared and unexperienced That wind chill. I think it was forecast for negative six degrees Celsius Severe wind chill Shelter All right, get some warm clothes on Instantly I feel warmer. Chuck the rain jacket back on, probably head back out into the snow and ice and wind Get the tent set up The snow's kind of turned to ice on the tussocks. It looks nice But it's brutal conditions to be in I think here we'll do More weather's coming in, so I've got to get the tent up quick Got the Helleberg Alec So it should take the wind. I'm quite exposed here, so Hopefully I can withstand it My fingers are going numb, so I'm gonna be quick I've got to try and get my fingers into these gloves They're sticking to the fleece lining Getting ice in the face Okay, it's time to go out. I think there's a bit of water on the lens So hopefully you can see me properly, but the winds aren't too high, so we should be all right Okay, I've got to get some of the stuff into the tent Hopefully the rain doesn't pick up too much. It's kind of like sleet at the moment So I can have the door open and it won't get too wet inside the tent Oh man So nice to get out of the winds Get some of the stuff Out of the pack. It looks like there's quite a lot of water on the lens. Hopefully you can see me all right Down jacket Got a new sleeping pad for this trip. It's the Alton Insulated. I think it's an R6 R-value, long, wide, and it weighs about 610 grams, so High specs. We'll test it out. I'm gonna get it blown up now because I'm sitting on the snow It's cold on my bum, so we'll do that. We'll sort the tent out Yeah, I think I need to get a coffee on or something That's good It's not very nice out here. It's almost snowing. Hopefully it cools down more and Big flakes just start coming in Back inside The enclosure Oh Things are deteriorating quickly out there Yeah, it's turning to snow Yeah, man It's full on. It's nice though Things are definitely intensifying out there. I think the tent should be okay It can take probably winds up to, I don't know, 60 kilometers per hour. I think it's 50 kilometers per hour gusts forecast, so We should be alright It's just starting to get pretty intense. You can see snow there building up It's more like ice just bashing into the tent Makes me a little bit nervous. It's just a thin layer of nylon and some poles between me and the elements Blueberry and raspberry tea, it's quite nice. I think it's clearing up outside The winds have picked up, but the snow has stopped so I'm gonna have this and then I'm gonna venture out And check out the views Man these winds they're relentless Luckily I have a great tent though Helleberg Allak It's fantastic. I wouldn't really trust Many other tents up here in these conditions It'll move around a bit, but it's solid It's supposed to flex in the wind Clearing up good That wind chill man It's very cold. This is the perfect test though for this down jacket. Does the nylon shell hold the warm air in? I think it does What a spot Yeah, I'm super impressed with this down jacket For the weight, it's holding in so much warmth. It's incredibly wind resistant It's a great piece of gear, but the wind chill out here, you know, it's severe Can't really stay out of it even though it's beautiful and sunny now It's just rough What a difference it makes to get back into the tent and out of the wind chill You can see it's quite sunny here behind me. So the tents kind of warming up It's probably like negative six or seven degrees Celsius wind chill out there. It's brutal You can see the peaks all covered in snow and everything. It's just amazing. What a spot to camp But yeah, I'm gonna chill for a bit, relax I think I'll come back to you guys for an epic dinner. This one's gonna be good. I've got a big appetite now So on the menu tonight, we have like a Korean sticky beef with rice. I've got some of my premium organic grass-fed carbon-neutral beef here for those people concerned and In this pottle, I've got my mixture which I made up at home, which is toasted sesame oil Soy sauce, brown sugar, garlic, ginger and lemon juice, I think So it's gonna be a delicious meal. I've been practicing this one at home So, yes, it's the first time I'm gonna whip it out on a camp, mix things up a bit I think it's time to get the sauce in and then not long to completion The aroma is gonna be Out of this world once it starts cooking in fresh garlic and ginger The toasted sesame oil It's a nice flavor My gas canister's like turned to ice It's not running very efficiently at the moment. It's so cold And I've also got a lemon for garnish and I'll use a bit of that for breakfast as well Because this is a culinary experience, you know There's so much food in there Okay, and a squirt of lemon How nice This is such an easy camp meal, honestly, it's one pot, a few ingredients, just chuck it all in, cook it up. Oh man It's like sweet, tangy, crunch, texture Everything you want in a meal The addition of spring onions is definitely worth it. It's coming in Sideways Bit of a blizzard out here It's totally nice and cozy inside the dome Hot chocolate. I think the snow's kind of stopped. There was like a random flurry that came through. It was pretty blizzardy outside But yeah, there's definitely a whole bunch coming in the morning. It's gonna be intense Oh Man that's good after dinner. I was gonna bring my summer quilt for this camp Which is only good down to about one degree But then I changed plans right at the end and brought this which is probably good down to like negative five to negative seven I'd say And I'm glad I made that choice because it's not summer yet I'm up. I got up out of the tent for a little investigation Yeah, brutal wind chills the snow stopped for now But I think it's gonna be coming back soon there's a wee dusting out here and Everything's icing up man Yep, snowing again Think it's bedtime It's gonna be a cozy night. I'm gonna get tucked in to the bivy I'll try to ventilate the tent a bit by exposing the mesh panels But I can't open the vents at the top because there's too much like spin drift and snow coming in But if I open them, it'll blow into the tent But that's okay The condensation should move to the flyer and not accumulate too much on the inner. So yeah, this is the tent It's pretty big and spacious. The cameras like right back down by my feet And you can see I got heaps of room out this side Unfortunately the way that the ground is sloping It's kind of forcing me right up against the wall here, but it doesn't really matter because you know There's a lot of room in here. It's like a proper two-person tent Me and Victoria did some pretty big snowstorm camps last year in this tent together If you're new to the channel and you're wondering who is Victoria that's my wife That's why the channels called Abel and Victoria. She used to come camping with me all the time, but She just had our baby about a month ago. So she's at home feeding the baby and looking after the baby and I'm out here Camping which something you might think is odd, but camping's kind of become my main activity, so it's important that I go and Yeah, I mean Victoria would wish to be out but she has more important things to do than camping right now But I just want to say a massive thank you to all you guys who have sent Kind messages and wished us well and congratulated us. It's kind of mind-blowing and I've like read them all I just can't respond to every message because there's just too many but really appreciate it So does Victoria and everything's going good. The baby's feeding well, and we're actually getting pretty good sleep I'm just doing all the cooking and the cleaning and You know all the jobs around the house if you have had a kid before you'll understand what I mean I just make tea and toast and coffee and clean and Yeah but It's all good. And yeah, it's quite exciting. It's fun getting home and seeing the little baby Penelope But yeah, I think I'm just gonna go to sleep and If the storm intensifies I'll definitely wake up and show you guys but so far it's been an amazing camp And I think it's gonna get better tomorrow morning That's enough for me, and I'll see you tomorrow. Good night Good morning, everybody It's about 5 30 a.m And it looks a little bit of a coating on the tent. I think more snow is coming in sleep pretty good I think we'll get a brew on and we'll have a look outside Keeping it simple have the old dirty dirty mocha combo Man, it's cold out there It's beautiful though lights coming into the sky there's like a pretty gentle breeze, but doesn't feel gentle when it's that cold I find when you mix together one of these Makonas Cabri Makonas and a Cappuccino Makona You get a nice balanced brew. I mean, it's nothing like a proper filter coffee, but It's simple. You see I'm not using my kettle on this trip. Usually I have the kettle But now I'm just boiling straight onto the cup because I'm bringing instant so I don't really need the kettle It's quite nice. Works good That Ultron sleeping pad was good by the way, I was warm, it's quite comfortable I'm not sure if it has pressure relief as good as some of the other Designed pads, but in saying that I felt real good on it. I was comfy Toasty. So yeah, I have a link in the description. You can check them out It's definitely a contender with all the other pads that I've used. It's a good piece of kit and it feels very durable as well It's like a thick Strong material like it doesn't feel like it's gonna pop which is nice. I just checked the rain radar. I think in like a few hours. We've got some pretty rough conditions coming in but It's kind of hard to know When exactly things are gonna hit but it's definitely it's all iced up the snow on the tents like Yeah, it's all frozen It's gonna be a rough takedown. There's just so many viewing angles from this place I'm literally surrounded by pristine views It's unreal It's solid ice The tent is completely iced up. All the guy lines are fully encased Solid ice all encrusted What an experience It's so warm in the tent. Well, it's not warm, but you know what I meant out of that wind chill Fingers are going real numb. I'm not wearing pants. I'm just wearing my base layers So my legs are getting a bit chilly but just look at this man, oh my goodness This is incredible. There's dark clouds out that way Coming around and some coming towards me. So I think I might get back into the tent and have another brew I'll just chill for a bit It's nice to be able to warm back up look how lofty this thing is Honestly, I love this Zen Bivi It's kind of changed camping for me, it's hard to explain how comfortable it is It's just a really nice piece of gear It's probably not for everyone and it is expensive but oh My goodness, it's worth it Yeah, I have the best sleeps Here it is You can bask in the glory of The Sun straight through the tent door while looking at the snow-covered peaks While encrusted in ice and warm and cozy in my bag Think I'll get breakfast on soon. It's gonna be delicious Can I toast them without destroying them No hot salmon Cheers everyone. What a breakfast Oh, it's worth putting in the extra effort for some nice food when you're up here. Oh That lemon juice man crucial cuts through it the capers sweet smoked salmon everything about it. Oh I'm not sure what's going on behind me, but I think clouds coming in. I'll check Yeah, it looks pretty dark not sure if it'll snow if the moisture will push on this far inland but Doesn't really matter This is already awesome It's a bit more snow coming in We get packed up And then we have a snowy walk out I think This is the Alton pad man. It was warm Feels strong as well. I like it. I want to test it some more. This is the valve that it's got pretty simple valve But it works Just one of these things to adjust pressure And to drain it just pull it out like that Works good, man You can see this little bit that goes over the top It's a little fly so you can have these vents open and vent it when it's raining and snowing Also, it tightens the whole top of the tent up When this is all taught It's a pretty good system There's some real nice big snowflakes just gently falling down. It's quite magical man, but it's very slowly falling. I think for next season next winter I'm gonna get some bigger tunnel tents Just because they're so much easier to set up When it's like snowing and windy The Alak's great But I want to try some more. So I think there's the Hilleberg Kenron which is like the massive expedition tent and Maybe an Imaj 3 Because I want the room I like having room in the tent Especially when I'm not bringing up the tarp It's good to have that extra space Look at all this snow. Man, that's cool I'm gonna have to take this down jacket off When I start moving it's just way too warm My toes are going a bit numb Gotta get moving It's a really quick walk down But it's beautiful. I should get nice views of the lake so I can show you that. Usually when I'm up here for the last couple times it's been Like real clagged in so you couldn't really see the view so Today we have a little treat of the epic view of the lake Down there's the car park It's quite far down All right time to head down shouldn't take long I'll catch up with you guys when I'm back down at the car and say goodbye, but I'm just gonna enjoy this walk out Soak up the views We're back down.
