Come on, come on, come on.
Welcome back Story Army. This week we are in the Netherlands to try the famous
canal jumping.
The farmers kicked it off like 300 years ago to get across all the little canals in the farmland
all around like little poles and then it just got totally out of hand. Now there's like
national competition.
The world record is over 22 meters running out of pole,
all sprint across a big canal into the sand and today we're going to learn how to do it.
I feel like we'll be f***ed if we tried this on the road but luckily,
luckily we've got big Marcus in the house.
Two times Dutch champion is here to hopefully teach us the Tekkers.
I think you guys will make it easy.
We've also got Ruben coming in as our lifeguard for the day, keeping us safe.
This is the final goal of the day, to run off one of these platforms here
and make it over to this side here. This is our practice zone.
It feels like we're very far away from our goal at the moment.
What's my raw potential lads, all right? What have I got?
Easy.
What are we looking for here coach?
It's really important when you jump in the pole, the pole goes between your legs.
Okay.
What I'm imagining is like in parkour you do jumps to the lamppost and you kind of rarely hit your
nuts. You've got I think jump in more like a little bit like a lache at the beginning,
a little dive and then like whipping the hip.
Yeah, I think it's time for you to show them how it's done.
Yeah. How does the master do it? Good call.
I'll be very impressed if he manages to climb up this one.
Yeah.
Just go straight down.
Why is it scary to go up?
No, legs either side. Well, I know why it's scary, but it feels so wrong.
This is how it's done. Take note.
Oh, are you joking?
No, no, no, no, no.
That's too much Tekkers. There's too much Tekkers.
He like did it so it went really slowly over, so it gave him enough time to go up.
Wow. Okay.
You make sure that you get time because at first you put the pole to the front
and when your feet are going up, you get the pole stable.
Okay.
So it's like just like a muscle up.
Oh, okay. Okay. Good attempt.
I would have been in the water, but not in the danger zone.
Yeah. Wow.
Oh, come on.
That's the first time you nailed it.
Are you hooked for life?
Yes.
Is there any English people that do it?
Do you know the English champ?
I don't know.
But we have to look at the books.
Coming for you, bro. I'm coming for you.
Watch your space, bro.
You do this barefoot, but you are dealing with like a really hard pole.
So they use bike tires to wrap around the feet.
You wrap the bike tire on the foot that's on the back of the pole
because you're using the front of your foot like this to push up.
It is kind of painful on bare skin.
Get me onto the big one. I'm ready.
I've got a British record to set.
This is more consequential than we originally thought.
We thought you could just turn up and just give it a go, but obviously not.
Take measures out. British records getting smashed.
But I think you guys can all trust the one already.
Come on.
We had heads up from one coach.
Can we get heads up from the safety team?
Do you reckon we're ready for the baby one?
Always. Double thumbs up. We're ready.
Right. It's now time to try the baby canal bike.
The smaller of the two.
Oh, my goodness.
So it's at your own risk.
That's the first thing I need to say.
There's one rule in jumping.
If Mark says, let's go, just let go.
It's immediately just in the water.
Water is safe. Everything else.
Yes, it's kind of dangerous.
Not mistaken for a let's go.
It's a let's go.
And I guess that's when you haven't got the jump right.
If the pole is going at an angle.
So we think you're going to land on the edge.
The edge is not soft.
Is that a big jump?
Yeah, no, no, no.
I want a little bit further.
Demanding.
Future British champion you're looking at.
Ready, boys?
Yeah, let's go.
Yeah.
I'm switching sports.
Yes, that was so fine.
It's easier in water than it is in sand.
Swaggy, you got this all day long, son.
Oh, shit.
Toby's wearing a cap.
It's getting serious.
Oh, yes, Bob.
Oh, the danger zone has been struck.
I'm clear so far of all of mine.
I'm trying to really focus on aiming it into that little groin area.
Max, you're up, lad.
What the hell?
It was a little sketchy bit in the middle.
I was like, oh, am I going to make it?
I think you're fine, yeah.
Yeah, that's good.
That's good.
It's now time for the bigger platform.
The big boy.
Oh, my goodness.
Right, that is big.
What do you reckon, then?
You got it.
Yeah.
We're on, what's that like, some aluminium cheap thing?
Yeah, that's an aluminium pole.
Aluminium pole.
Look at this bad boy.
Carbon number.
So you've tested loads of them already.
Yeah, this is the latest pole.
It's a carbon fibre pole with an aluminium drop.
So it stands freely in the water.
Carbon fibre, mate.
All right, let's send it.
Wait, how expensive is one of these poles?
Around €4,000 or €5,000.
Yeah, I thought so.
Euros.
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
This is legit.
The newest ones are like €5,000 to €6,000.
Yeah.
The amount of training you're putting in, like, in all the facilities,
is there decent prize money for the winners?
No, there's no prize money.
No prize money?
I do it all for free.
For the love.
For the love of the sport.
I'm saying, whenever he's like, I'm going to put it further,
it still doesn't look far to jump to.
It's, like, literally there.
Yeah, so we can put that as far as we can.
We can get a nice, clean, take-off catch.
Tilt over, a couple bumps up, we can get it, boys.
You have to go faster, though, if you're putting it further away.
Yeah.
I'm chilling.
That last one, you were, like, proper chilling at the top of the pole.
Do you know what I mean?
Whereas on this one, that would then come back.
I feel like, naturally, bigger size, we're going to put it,
I'm going to put in more power.
I'm going to, definitely.
But I don't think power off the edge is our problem.
No.
I think that's the thing that we have got that's good for us.
It's like, we're used to getting to an edge and, like, accelerating through it.
Yeah.
I think they're probably used to students that don't know how,
they run up and they slow down as they get to the edge.
Maybe, yeah.
But we're used to that, like, all right, the last two steps are the most important.
Put in beans.
Yeah.
Let's go, Ruben.
Wow.
He really, like, went really quite far away.
I think this is a British record.
Look at the distance.
Yeah.
It's, like, rarely the same as the lower one.
But only because the water is deeper.
OK.
But you got it easy.
OK.
So, OK, we're going to have one more look at it.
Aiming for this red tape, you reckon?
Yeah.
OK.
Any last bits of advice?
Just don't lose tempo.
OK.
Follow through.
OK.
I love how calm,
I love how calm you are, Marcus.
You're really settling me with your voice.
It's just simple.
I trust him.
Yeah, thank you.
Yeah.
OK.
I could do that.
I just, I didn't commit.
I thought, can I call, can I kind of, like, nudge it over?
But, ah.
Dan, more commitment needed, more speed.
Here we are, first attempt.
Apparently, I bottled the run up a little bit.
Maybe, maybe I didn't really calculate my steps
and I had a little stutter or something.
But I definitely feel confident about doing that.
Marcus is going to give one a go now.
Show us how it's all done.
Restore our faith in the technique.
Oh, my God.
They're huge.
That has got to be close to your...
How far is that?
Four meters away from your record.
Look at that.
You're not even close to the water.
Even nowhere near.
Nowhere near the water.
Look how far away he is.
There's take-offs over there.
Wow, very well done.
That is really, really good.
You got it too.
Yeah, I do, I do.
Right, Toby's up next.
As always, strong favourite to succeed.
The best out of all of us.
He's such a good all-rounder, I believe.
Swag child.
That's the good thing about doing parkour,
is you can nail the run up.
Maybe if someone trying this that didn't do parkour
would have committed then,
Toby knew straight away the run up's not right.
Yeah!
Yes, Toby!
Come on.
You had the right to grab.
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
You know you can get to the end.
It's faffy like...
You were running up to it last couple of steps.
That's why you're like...
No, really?
Yeah.
Really?
You can say, you can officially say you've done it now.
Yeah.
Like you've completed the big one.
That was legit.
And you had a bump up.
Grid techers.
Boom, boom.
Oh, yeah.
Two bumps and you're clearing it by miles.
One bump and you're good.
12 metres.
Wait, so the British record's like that?
Yeah.
If you had the two good bump ups,
you've beaten the British record.
Oh, mate.
And once you tip over,
you've got even more time on the pole.
Okay.
Yeah, fine.
Totally fine, totally fine.
And then running off over there kind of hurt a bit.
Running there, so...
Right, Max, you're going.
Come on, bro.
Normal people don't get this on the first day.
Really?
Yeah, it's crazy.
Really?
But I knew it.
Do most people get that one?
At least.
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
They give it a go.
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
Okay, we've got to get this one.
Mate, this feels like...
I've done that bit.
If I have to do this, I feel like...
This is the official completion.
Yeah.
The main one.
Speed, come on.
Go, go, go, go!
How did he make it?
I don't understand.
I was screaming already,
lose it, lose it, lose it, climb, lose it, climb.
It's like you decided to climb higher later,
but it still worked.
I thought I was going to be tipping back,
so I was ready to let go.
Yeah.
Like, wait a second, I've got to go.
That was sick.
I'm back at it for redemption.
Take two.
I just need to commit.
I got it.
Let's get it.
Okay, let's go.
Coming in.
My last problem is that I like kind of caught it to the side,
turned around, pulling it off the side.
It's important to keep your muscles on.
Yeah.
And just go straight through the pull.
Straight through it, okay.
It's more unnatural for us,
but now I get it now,
I know that that needs to be done.
Okay, cool.
Boys ready?
Look at the angle, it's so bad.
Oh, the steps were the worst somehow,
and they...
Yeah.
Were they shouting off?
No, no, climb, climb, climb, climb.
They shouted off on my way, actually.
I shouldn't have fucking...
Yeah, go, go, go, climb, climb.
Climb, climb, climb, yeah.
It was really nice,
because the way it like slowly tilted,
it's just tiny bit of angle.
Yeah, yeah.
I think I'm doing that because I'm still going off to one side
to not avoid the ball back.
Success.
Toby, like always,
one step off from being an elite performer at this sport,
and the first day he's ever tried it.
I feel like mine was a fluke.
Like I slid down a little bit.
Hello, joiners.
Joiners, we're back.
Joiners get the OG content.
The stuff you all want to see.
The stuff that we want to do,
but YouTube's not letting us.
Oh.
Only support and love for these rooftop missions.
Little sneaky club for the best rooftop content.
We saved it for you, lovely joiners.
Only joiners get to see these things.
Only joiners.
You can relax.
It is a bit of an urban playground out here.
We love the joiners.
What the hell, lads?
Big up the joiners.
So we got some important info here.
The championships only really happen in Holland and apparently Belgium.
So people from around the world do travel down and try and compete.
And there's been a British person.
And this line here is at 13 meters.
The British record is 14.5.
So if you're landing here,
you're the British champion.
And this is the first time we've ever tried the canal vaulting.
So I feel like Toby on this one might be quite close.
If Toby makes it over this red bull,
the red fire giant bull,
he's a British champion.
I'm just gonna puff up the landing over the British world record.
Oh, that's good.
The pole can go way further.
You all right?
Yeah, that hurt my ankle.
I didn't quite land right.
That was good though.
Yeah, just same ankle is a bit...
I need to remember that.
Felt so good on the run up that I ignored it.
I'm trying to think how I can bail out if I am actually like too scared.
You said it just feels intuitive.
If you're on the pole, you know if you can make it or not.
Yeah.
And listen to Marcus.
Come on, come on, come on.
Great attempt.
Unlucky, good commitment.
Yeah, thank you.
I was a little bit worried like when he was going underwater
with the pole in between you.
But it was a slow slide, I guess.
Oh no, unlucky.
Oh no, I'm like, I regret everything.
You've got your hand still on, which is perfect.
I think that was amazing.
I was like, if it's going to my balls, at least cushion it in my hands.
Do you regret it?
No, I'm happy.
Swaggy's got one last attempt to become the British record holder.
The safety team did say the weather in Holland is so accurate.
So if they say it's going to rain in 20 minutes, it will.
It will rain.
It is, you can see on the water.
The drips are coming in.
If it gets too wet, you can't grip the pole.
So Toby coming in.
His last attempt, our last attempt.
He's wrapped both feet as well.
Yeah, come on Swaggy.
Breaking the British record in the rain.
So British.
If anyone can do it on their first day in this sport, it's Toby Seaguar.
Fly, fly, fly.
Ah, so close.
Yeah, yes, yes.
Fly, fly.
This is the British record.
If he jumps over this.
Yeah, Toby's just landed here and the British record's there.
Oh my god, Bob.
That is so close.
I mean, we're giving this British champ quite the reputation.
You know what I mean?
Yeah.
He's actually pretty shit.
Yeah, to be fair, these Dutch boys would smoke everyone that England can offer.
I mean, no one from the UK really does this.
It's more of a Dutch national sport than a UK sport.
So we haven't put many athletes into this sport, but.
The beef.
You know what I mean, though?
Compared, you know what I mean?
British champion is six meters off the world record.
You know what I mean?
Yeah, true.
It's a long way, but yeah, I don't know.
See what happens.
It's still good.
Still counts.
Do it for the country.
Do it for the crown.
Poor guy.
And we haven't even named him.
He's so disrespectful.
So how do you think we've done on our first day?
Oh, great.
Really?
I didn't expect this.
Really?
It was really good.
Really?
What score would you give us on first day score rating?
First day?
Yeah.
Nine.
I don't think I ever had someone that comes in first day and does this good.
Really?
Yeah.
Yes.
It's really amazing.
Yeah.
Especially Bob.
It's crazy.
50 more centimetres and then your boy Bob is the British champion.
What do you reckon, Josh?
Do you reckon he's got it?
Yeah, I think so for sure.
Like when I actually was standing over there filming this.
Filming this, sorry.
I thought he went over.
Yeah.
When he was on the pole up here, I was like, oh, that looks great.
And then it was like, it just didn't quite hit the end.
But yeah, look, from my perspective, they attacked it really well.
Got the right amount of height and it's just that little bit more, I guess.
Let's go, Bob.
Come on.
Not easy though, is it?
No, that was my first one coming way off.
I don't really know why.
I think I was a bit left and then I, so I pushed the bar really hard.
And when I whipped, it was going over there.
Yeah, yeah, yeah, exactly.
You took off a little bit left.
It all happens there, right?
Yeah.
Hammer it down the middle, like a good solid nail.
Surely, surely it's a British record.
Surely, surely.
Oh, that felt so good.
What the hell?
That was sick.
Oi, that felt so different to the rest.
That was so good.
What the hell?
Come on.
Get the tape measure out.
The boys were happy about the jump.
They were like, yes, yes, yes, come on.
Oh, it felt so different.
It felt so different.
You got everything in, perfect, yeah.
When you get the feet on.
Yeah, look, look, boom.
Yes.
Such a clean one.
That is so, when you get the feet right, it feels so good.
Thanks, man.
And it was the first time my feet like latched good.
It was the first one, then like halfway through the second one, I like clocked the ball.
Yeah.
It did look like you cleared it.
What is this?
Let's get a re-measurement, just to be sure.
40 meters and 78 centimeters.
That's 50 centimeters further than the British national record.
14 meters.
14 meters, 80.
78.
78, 14, 78.
14 meters, 78.
Pick up the boys.
Yes.
You literally got a coach running behind you.
He's like, come on, come on, come on, come on.
So, Toby, on your first day of trying this, you've set a British record, pal.
Yeah, just mind blown that you made it.
Thanks so much.
Walking us through it, man.
Yeah, you've been the best coaches that we could have asked for.
Perfect level, yeah.
Let's go to Mark.
No, both of you.
He invited you here.
Both of you.
You say that, Ruben missed the first date today.
Oh, really?
Really, I cancelled the first date.
You can send this to her.
Yeah.
He is a firefighter as well, so.
Damn, son.
Yes, bro.
National record.
Big up the coach.
Big up the boys.
I trust you, I trust you, I trust you, I trust you, I trust you, I trust you.
Oh, yes.
Insane.
I just got a fucking sprint.
Follow through with those legs.
Your speed was great.
And he's here to smash Toby's record.
Yeah.
Ain't you, bro?
Definitely.
Level it up.
I think I've got a bit more confidence than last attempt, but I don't know.
Hold on, get your legs involved, swooping through and then boost them up.
I think from watching the iPhone clip, it really helped because it's just like
tense the arms instead of let them go.
And what Toby said, just get more height and it will help me out.
With those two things, I'm just going to see how it goes.
I think you're definitely hanging on with those two things.
Oh, come on, go on, go on.
You've absolutely drenched me.
Have you seen that?
Oh, you're so close.
I'm stepping on squid.
Squid work.
It's mushy shit.
Mate, I could see your eyes.
I wanted to clip, but I think I bailed out.
Yeah.
I think you could have had it.
Boss man, safety team, fireman is on the phone.
Oh, he's just finished on the phone.
Did you put...
Guys, it's official.
Who did you just call then?
I just called an official from the sport and he said it's fine if you measured it.
You have video footage.
It's counting.
Tick, tick.
Congratulations, Bob.
Do you know who...
Since 2001.
Do you know who it was?
We can look it up.
In a minute.
We just smashed a 23-year-old record.
Are you joking?
Yes!
