What Did Scandinavians Do in the American Civil War?
By the time of the American Civil War, many Danes, Swedes and Norwegians had already emigrated to the United States, mostly to the northern Midwest, states like Minnesota and Wisconsin. No surprise then that the 15th Regiment, Wisconsin Infantry was also known as 'the Scandinavian Regiment.' In New York too, Scandinavians rallied around the Union's banner forming units and regiments to fight. Some Scandinavians fought for the Confederacy too, like adventurers from Sweden and a small community of Texas Norwegians.
