The Parkes Radio Telescope Dish facts.
64 meter diameter parabolic dish
Weighs 1000 tonnes above the control tower
Observes 24 hours a day
Observes radio waves 7mm to 4m long
Maximum operational windspeed is 25km hr-1
Takes 15 minute to rotate 360 degrees
Th dish is not fixed to the top of its tower, but just sits on it with its own weight holding it down

Parkes radiotelescope and Honeysuckle creek station in Australia received voice and video signals from the Apollo 11 moonwalk in 1969, which was redistributed to millions of viewers. Parkes, televised images were superior to other ground stations, and NASA used them for much of the broadcast. One of the first to use the newly developed corrugated feed horn, Parkes became the model for the NASA Deep Space Network large aperture antennas.
Was commisioned in 1961 and has allow astronomers to explore the universe in greater detail.
There are 250 steps from the ground to the highest point on the dish. That is the same as climbing a 15 storey building.
The iconic movie "The dish" and thing related to the movie were are great read.
The cricket game in the movie was used to tell the size of the dish but staff have not actuall played cricket on the dish as a cricket ball would have damage the dish surface, instead a soft tennis ball was used in the movie.
The Oservatory is actually located about 20km north of Parkes just off the Newell Highway. Sign on the highway will let you know when to turn off.
Adress is 585 Telescope Road, Parkes NSW 2870
Opening time is 8-30am to 4-15pm
There is plenty of parking but the cafe is closed down now.
Arrive early morning to see the dish moved into position.
Entry is free but have to pay to see the 3D show and gifts are good at the gifts shop.
Well worth the visit and great for all ages.
Kids will be amazed when they talk to each other while one standing in front of one dish and the other at the other dish and whisper to each other.
This is in front of the entrance to the Observatory.
Enjoy and thanks for watching.
