Is it possible to use your iPad for comic book pencils?
I say yes and I will show you today how to sketch with Procreate.
Make sure to watch the whole video for all the tips and tricks I will give you here.
My name is Dr. Rocker and now it's time to draw!
Sketching on the iPad comes with a lot of advantages.
Once you have your canvas ready, I would recommend a 3 or 400 dots per inch.
That would be big enough should you want to print it out later.
You start with a rough sketch.
For the first draft I like to use the Narinda pen.
It's just a thin line, nothing fancy.
Use a bright red color and begin with the sketch.
When using a red color it will be easier to differentiate the rough sketching lines from
the pencil lines later.
One of the biggest advantages when sketching with the iPad is that you can take the whole
drawing from a layer and move it around on your piece of paper.
Which means you can grab your character or in this case the arm and put him in the middle
of the page if necessary.
Or make him bigger or smaller so you can make sure to have enough space left on the page
to put everything in where you planned it.
If you're not sure about the size of a specific body part, you can either draw it on an extra
layer and make it bigger or smaller.
Just like you see here.
Or you use the freehand mask tool to grab the part like the hand here and move it around
or make it bigger and smaller as you wish.
This really comes in handy, especially when drawing hands and heads.
How often did you draw a hand or a head that looked nice but had to redraw the whole thing
only cause it was too small?
No problem here.
That also means you can draw your sketch in the size most comfortable for you.
That is really convenient cause usually there's one size you are best at and that's the one
you will draw in.
The layers are also great if you want to draw more characters.
You just draw a rough sketch of all the poses on extra layers and put them together later.
Or at least you will be able to change the size of the individual characters so they
are in the right proportions to one another.
Then I would also recommend to draw them in different colors.
That way you will have a nice overview.
A very good trick when sketching is mirror your drawing in between and continue to draw.
This way you can spot mistakes easily and if you go back and forth with it, it will
look as correct as it can get.
When you are happy with your rough sketch, combine all your layers to one.
Then we turn down the opacity of this layer.
Way back down.
After that, a new layer above will be our actual pencil sketch layer.
For pencils, Procreate provides not the most choices but still good enough for a realistic
looking pencil sketch.
The best one for a comic book drawing is the HB pencil.
It really looks like an actual pencil line but not the most sharp one.
As an alternative, you can also use a pen from the ink section like the Inka one right
here.
When you use grey instead of black, it looks quite pencil like.
But I will stick to the HB pencil today for a more natural look.
We start off with the outlines and put in some line weight right away.
You can do that with various pressure but better to just use an extra line to thicken
it where needed.
Another great tip when drawing with the iPad, when you are drawing at the edge, this can
be very uncomfortable right there.
But you can use a book or something of the sort which has about the same height and then
your hand is on the same level like the iPad and then you can draw properly.
Once the line weight is done, we create a new layer.
This layer will be for the strong blacks.
We will also just use the pencil to draw the strong blacks.
Don't just fill it out like that, I'll show you real quick, because that doesn't look
right.
You see, that's just a plain surface and we want the sketchy look.
So go ahead and do the works with all the pencil lines.
You can hold your pen in this angle which means there will be a little bit of wider
lines so you are way faster than when you are just holding it like that.
So keep that in mind.
Let me show you properly real quick.
This is the line when you hold the pen upright and this is the line when you hold the pen
like that.
The beauty of drawing the strong blacks on an extra layer is that you can erase them
where done wrong without touching the line work.
Again, one of the greatest advantages when drawing digitally.
When you are happy with your blacks, best to create a new layer for the hatching lines.
Same reason, you can erase them without having to be extra careful.
But mostly, the fastest way to start anew with wrong looking hatching lines is to just
use the two finger tap to undo your last step.
Just tap like a crazy person should you have to erase a bunch of lines.
Overall, it's very important to move your canvas around as much as necessary so you
can use your favorite movement for creating lines.
But be extra careful when doing so, cause often you will make a line accidentally when
the iPad doesn't get your intention.
Those lines are easily overseen once the drawing is getting bigger and more complicated.
So keep that in mind.
And of course, since we are trying not to keep everything too complicated, we can get
rid of the first layer now so we will just see the actual drawing.
Okay so now I will start a drawing of Deadpool to use all these tips so you can see it in
a bigger drawing as well.
But I have quite more tips and tricks to teach you, so let me just work on this drawing real
quick and I'll be right back.
I just wanna get her all alone on a mattress I just wanna have it, I just gotta have it
Rumors all around say her body is fantastic All natural, not a piece of fur is plastic
Head to her toes, yeah they say that she's a latch
Yeah the whispers all around say she has a reputation
Don't believe it till I see it, so I want a demonstration
And I've always learned it better with a hands-on education
So I need a private session if you get what I am saying
And they say that she's not easy No, she's really complicated
But that only makes it better and it's got me so
Okay, I'm almost done here, but we still need to bring this drawing to the next level which
means we need to add some veins and folds.
And these are so much more easy when you draw digital.
Check this out!
First, we create an extra layer.
Then we choose another background color.
Select a simple round brush, can be from the painting or airbrush section.
The color we will use is pure white.
And now we just draw in the veins and folds.
Which we will see properly because of the different background color.
Once we are done with all of these, we just draw in the shadow of the veins and folds.
With the pencil again, of course.
When we are done with all of these, we change the background color back to white and voila!
Great looking drawing!
All that's left to do now is to add some small hatching lines to the veins so they look better.
And here we go!
All done!
Looks like pencils, but it's all done on the iPad.
And that's all you need to know about sketching with Procreate.
I hope you had fun watching and I hope you learned a thing or two.
If you did, then make sure to subscribe to my channel and turn on the post notification bell
so you won't miss out on any of my future content.
And keep your eyes peeled for my Kickstarter project!
Will be out very soon!
Very cool!
I drew a whole book.
But more about that, as I just said, very soon.
And also, I will be on Vienna Comic Con, 1st and 2nd of October.
Okay, so see you on my next video.
And until then, I want you to go now and watch this video.
That's where I show you how to ink on the iPad, also with Procreate.
So a very fitting video to today's one.
You will also learn some more tips and tricks about all the beautiful things you can do with the iPad.
So see you there, my friends!
Have a great day!
Don't forget to draw every day!
And yeah, see ya!
