These are the monologues of a lonely man that Brahms committed to paper. In the summer of 1892, from Bad Ischl, he wrote to the librarian of the Gesellschaft der Musikfreunde in Vienna, Eusebius Mandyczewski, asking him to send him 'such a 24-36 horizontal format for piano', i.e. horizontal music paper like that used for 'piano pieces' in Mozart's time. That year he completed the Fantasias, Opus 116, and the Intermezzi, Opus 117, followed the following summer by the piano pieces of the Opera, Opus 118 and 119. These were twice the ten pieces that remained after Brahms's rigorous selection process, as he discarded and destroyed some of them at the last minute. The published pieces are therefore only the essence of two (and certainly many more) years of final, intensive work on the instrument on which he had begun his career forty years earlier.
