The first movement of Bach's second harpsichord partita, published in 1727, is a case of a piece for keyboard instrument that would have been impossible to perform on old trumpets and horns: the key of C minor, the many chromatic secondary notes and the remote modulations would have been simply too much for the instruments of the time. Today, this highly expressive movement is a masterpiece for any brass ensemble. It is in three parts, which is why Bach called it a 'Sinfonia', the Italian term of the day for a three-part introduction. It begins with a majestic Grave (Heavy), which almost sounds like an organ piece with its powerful chords, followed by a more delicate Andante (Going) with a cantabile upper voice, and finally a fast two-part fugue on a typically dance-like Bach theme.
