"For the clavier, not the piano ‘Clavier’ must be written with a C in this case, as Bach did in the original title, because this is undoubtedly music for a two-manual harpsichord, not a one-manual piano. Bach knew and appreciated the early pianos of his time, the Silbermann fortepianos. But in this case he was thinking exclusively and explicitly of the harpsichord. Many of the complicated voice crossings in the variations can only be performed without difficulty on two manuals, whereas they force the modern pianist to make compromises. The transparency that the harpsichord naturally displays, its full, colourful sound even in ‘thin’ two-part movements and the characteristic differences in sound between the registers make it the ideal medium for a cycle in which Bach exploited all the possibilities of compositional technique - from gallant cantabile to strict canon."
