hey everyone how are y'all I have a
special guest with me today and y'all
are going to be super excited because
she's going to be showing us how to make
a mask out of t-shirt I'm excited Hey
ladies this is Katie was so cute bye
Katie and y'all she has other videos on
how to make mask on so make sure you go
check out the channel it is so cute bye
Katie
and she is participating in this London
Marathon we've been doing trying to keep
everybody occupied so that you're not
getting bored and going crazy so I am
gonna make Katie large so that she can
get started hey everyone give me one
second I'm trying to tell everybody
where to join us hey y'all good
afternoon
so how are y'all surviving today it's
hard working about that's the YouTube
channel right yep that's it
won't let me post this sweet I'm trying
to do this okay okay
just telling everybody now I'm trying to
find you find us I can make sure
everybody can see ya we've got we've got
people from everywhere I don't like this
game oh here we go
oh gee it's insane okay all right I can
see us now
and so I can make sure you all can see
what I'm doing good thank you Laurie for
letting me join you I've been making
masks like crazy
I own a alteration and embroidery gift
shop in Louisville Kentucky and being
that the stores closed now I'm just
sliding away at home making these masks
I've got a couple of videos that Laurie
mentioned on how to make masks that
we're gonna this is going to be video
number four on how to make a mask and
the problem right now is elastic have
gotten to be like toilet paper and paper
towels you can't find it and even
material all the stores are closed
except Walmart and they're even getting
wiped out of material so we're going to
get resourceful today and we're gonna
make a mess like this but we're just
going to use a t-shirt so you know
everybody's got a t-shirt I'm sure
there's one in your closet you can spare
if you want to make one for yourself if
you're making it brothers probably the
cheapest thing would be to get
undershirts just a package of mints
undershirts and make them out of that
and it would be really easy I have not
done this a trial run but I think I can
make it work so the good thing about
niche is being that the little quarter
inch elastic is so hard to get if you
order it it's like shipping like a month
from now so you can make your strips
from the t-shirt cuz it's stretchy and
it's soft so I think it'll work just
fine so I'm gonna angle the camera down
just so you can see my workspace better
and see what I'm doing so I've got the
tshirt laid out and first I'm going to
just cut off this little hem right here
because we don't really want to use that
no I don't think you can find elastic
anywhere it's like everything else hard
to find yes
okay so I am going to I'm using my
quilting ruler which is um their six I
don't know if you can see that thickness
so that you can run your rotary kind of
right next to it
I've had some other rulers but like the
little other plastic rulers you'll end
up cutting it that's around second so
I'm going to cut just a one inch strip
first and this will be my earpiece a
little thread that doesn't quite cut you
know cut the seam open so we got one
long continuous piece now I'm going to
I'm gonna cut this a little differently
than what I've done on the other mask
because I'm gonna cut it
I've been using nine inches width but
I've been using like a big long piece
and like folding it so I'm just gonna do
a square and I'm gonna make it nine
inches wide probably kind of think what
they end up being 13 probably a 9 by 7
and then that way it'll give us a little
bit for pleating and then I'm gonna use
this this is a really cool marking tool
it's called a friction pin and it looks
just like a marking pin but when you run
the iron over it I'll show you when you
run the iron over this they look just
like a like a pin mark but when you run
the iron over it it disappears with heat
so it's pretty cool oh that's cool I
might have to have one of those even
though they're needy all right I'm sure
that would come in handy
all right so I'm gonna just draw out my
rectangle I want this to be using my
ruler upside down told him can't
remember than like wait a minute where
am I going
so we're gonna be nine inches and this
is gonna be a nine by eight and I did
mark this on the fold just to save on my
fabric so I'm gonna cut that open
because I actually need that little side
let's smooth this out I got a little
folded we're gonna put our last our
fabric ties not elastic so I'll open
that up but just so I'm not wasting any
material okay so I'm going to separate
this now you want to use put right sides
together this is just a white t-shirt so
I don't like doesn't totally matter but
I won't put right sides I think I can
tell so if you take your fabric strip
you stretch it like this then it like
totally curls up so it looks more like a
tube so you can see the difference this
is the section I have not stretched like
this and then this is the end
you got all skinny you stretch it so if
you do that all the way down I would
just stretch it that's gonna make your
strip
and I would cut that eight inches long
and we on the elastic we use like seven
half eight inches and you're gonna need
two strips great both sides eight
Francis katie has a really good video
how to make the mask um if you're just
looking to make the regular mask with
the elastic stuff just check out her
channel it's so cute by Katie here on
YouTube and try that and don't get
depressed just consider that practice
okay so you're gonna put your ties or
your earpiece close to the top and when
you pleat this and it'll get closer
together so just make it about a
half-inch from it from the edge
and if you've ever made and this you
don't even need to sew up the earpiece
because knit does not unravel it just
curls so you don't even need to finish
that so you don't need to like so it
make a tube or anything like that just
stretch it and it'll curl up but this is
your alternative to elastic and you
could use this on regular material I'm
just making the whole thing from the
t-shirt okay so now see that really well
so it's white
I think everyone's out of elastic Joanne
so she's using t-shirt fabric I'm I just
cut up a t-shirt so now if you had to
pin down the color of your shirt I'm
using white so it's hard to tell but put
your right sides together and if you've
ever made like a pillow or something
this is kind of like what we're doing
cuz we're just going to close it up
we're gonna leave an opening and turn it
so I'm just going to pin this around so
you can see what I'm doing so I'm not
gonna put a bunch of pins but I'm just
showing you so right here I've got two
pins I'm gonna start at one pin and go
all the way around and stop at the other
so this area right here is the opening
where I'm going to turn it so I'm the
earpieces are on this side and they'll
be all stitched in and then we'll turn
it and then we'll plate it so let me
take you over to the machine here we're
gonna sew and you just want to use like
the edge of your presser foot kind of a
seam guide it doesn't need a very deep
seam allowance and then when you turn
your corners put your needle down into
your fabric and then raise your presser
foot and swing the material around and
being that the t-shirt material it does
curl so I'm trying to just kind of
uncurl it of us so to keep it flat
that's right caught under here let me
cut this there we go now we've got our
straps sandwiched in between the two
layers start everything stop okay so now
we have our opening right here like this
and we're going to reach in here and
turn it right side up it's actually a
t-shirt but I think you cut it did you
say you cut it nine and I need 9 by 8 9
by 8 Karen if normally I have like a big
long piece of fabric that I do all at
once but I sense the t-shirts not a big
continuous piece of fabric I just went
ahead and cut two pieces okay so now I
don't have my iron out but I would just
iron or finger pressed where the opening
is you just finger press this part down
now what I would do is just leave this
open that way you if you want a lot of
people ask to have an opening to put
some type of filter inside so this is
going to be your opening for the filter
will be right there
and again you don't need to worry on the
t-shirt because you don't want you to
worry about it
Frank or anything that it just rolls
so then the next thing you need to do is
just put two pleats and I just eyeball
this I kind of start at the bottom and I
pinch it up about you know a half an
inch two inches and then fold that down
and then I'll pinch in you know up here
and now just kind of try to evenly
distribute that okay so now you've got
it pleated and we're just going to
stitch down the sides right here and
what I like to do is I start at the top
and I put my needle down in the Machine
and then raise your presser foot and
turn it and then I stitch back up that
way you stitched it twice so when you're
washing and stuff you know it's not
going to come on stitched and it's gonna
hold those pleats really well so let me
go ahead get this done and then we'll
see how it fits hopefully it's good I
haven't done one that's so cool too
because it's easy to find t-shirts
everybody has t-shirt extra t-shirts
that's right but even if you don't make
the last part on the t-shirt you can
make your ear pieces from the t-shirt
and then just use that you know make
your other cotton materials but the
t-shirts are going to be really soft too
so I've got one side stitch it I'm just
if you want to pin these pleats
I don't pin mine just because I'm just
do them you know quickly but you can
just put a little pin or if it helps you
to run the iron over it after you kind
of laid out your pleats and then that
way you don't just kind of stay in place
as you sew it yes straps here from the
t-shirt she just cut the trimming along
the edge of the t-shirt and that's what
she used and she stretched it first I'm
fascinated by this
that's probably mostly because I don't
say well I used to so but I don't now
okay so that's it and then you have your
opening and then this will come undone
some of me let's see how this looks this
will be P true test now it's a little
big on me but it worked cool
now you may need to shorten up the
straps because it's going to stretch
more than the elastic so I used I think
I cut it eight so I normally cut seven
and a half eight inches on my elastic so
I would probably cut these a little bit
smaller if you're making it for yourself
you might want to just you know maybe
pin it on and then try it on before you
sew it because you might want to make
these little straps a little shorter so
I might even go six and a half and
because it does stretch a lot more than
then the elastic does but you can see
it's still stretchy the good thing is
it's really soft so it's not going to be
irritating your ears you know that kind
of thing so you know just like a comfy
t-shirt you know you've got your comfy
t-shirt mask but you know you can make
these strips and just use it on your
cotton materials and if you don't want
to make the actual mass from the t-shirt
but it's just a good resourceful way
since we're running out of elastic and
all that kind of stuff so I think it's
brilliant so just just trying to be
resourceful so that is one project and
then I was going to do a quick little
Easter project since it is a week away
and I'm at yet just making a quick table
runner this is another quick and easy
quilted project that you can do so I
will put that back on the table and I'll
show you what we're knew next awesome
you know make sure you check out her
channel because she has several videos
on there on how to make masks that if
you want to make masks she has other
videos on there too
thank you to meet her she has other
videos on there about all different
kinds of projects that she's done so
with the table runner all you need to do
is determine how wide you want your
table runner and measure the length of
your table runner you don't want it to
hit the you know full width of your
table you know I would bring it in you
know right it's all personal preference
I just really put them on there as a
decoration some people want to hang it
off the table but I just kind of lay it
on top so I have mine probably about
three inches from the edge on either
side of my table so what I'm gonna do
with this is just some very quick
quilting I'm just gonna draw some lines
and just sew straight across just sew
the top of it has a little book this is
just some fabric that I had gotten at
Hobby Lobby a few weeks ago for Easter
and I'm got quilt batting and I've got a
piece it together cut by my scrap of
batting mother exact but your quilt
batting just like fishing but comes in a
package or you can bed off the Roll so
I'm going to use the friction pen that I
was using before and I'm just going to
I'm gonna stand and do some lines across
and you can kind of notice that there
are cute little puppies on that whole
material it's so cute
it is cute that's that's not a reason I
bought it just cuz it reminded me of my
dog it's so cute and my ruler it ain't
happened just wide so I'm just gonna use
the width of my ruler because I don't I
just want to give it a little bit of
texture I'm not gonna do any like heavy
closing you can you know do any kind of
design you want to do on there and then
we're gonna put a back on it and it's
gonna be a self binding that we're going
to do so it's really easy
I've never seen one of these made it's
very easy I've started kind of doing it
probable holiday because sometimes I
think it's it's cuter it's a little
cuter than some of the placemat but my
children or my family myself included
probably every time you put out cute
placemats never-fail something still but
and they're not great to wash they get
out from me so I'm just gonna sew
straight lines where my ten mark is just
to give it a little quilting and then
we'll put the back on it
and you just want to make sure you keep
your fabric smooth you know that it
doesn't get a wrinkle in there and I'm
just gonna roll this out because you
know eventually I'm gonna get more and
more kind of underneath the machine so
I'm going to just kind of roll it and
then do the next line rosemary would
like to know where you got that ruler oh
it is a quilting ruler I actually think
I got it at jo-ann I can get it at any
quilt shop or Amazon and I think I have
a link to the mug on my website there's
more information when I put that link to
it my aunt alone stop knitting it for
him there's all kinds like different
shape things for quilt rulers this is
just a regular I ran out of bobbin so
then and these pre round bauble if I use
like for embroidery just know the best
ever and then you can just pop them in
and not really have to whine one oh
those are awesome see I didn't know that
when I was doing it well they're
warrants you don't sell them at the
store like it's an embroidery supply
because your embroidery machine you
don't have like a thing to run bobbins
you know like you do on your sewing
machine
oh no but they work in your sewing
machine I'm learning all kinds of new
stuff today huh I learned in all kinds
of new stuff today I know I know
I don't even just using you know white
thread on my master some changing
threads and trying to match colors and
all that craziness so it's very handy
and I'm just now I'm going to turn this
around because put the bulk of it to the
outside this is my last line and this is
where I've got it pieced together so I
gotta hold it carefully the baggie just
gives it a little bit of texture
honestly you don't necessarily have to
do it if you're not gonna use any quilt
batting but I think it just makes it
give it a little bit you know of a
heavier feel makes a little nicer and
I'm just gonna trim off the excess
that's hanging off here we don't want
that in our binding all right about cut
a piece of elastic that's like gold
okay she lay this out a little pork okay
so now I'm gonna use this cute little
gingham and you want to cut your backing
four inches at least and this is kind of
personal preference but then that way
you have like a little about an inch to
fold in so you've got two inches on
either side excess wider than your
actual decorative top piece and just
make sure that this is all nice and
smooth other favorite ruler are these
little clear either little flexible
rulers but they're very very handy just
a little two inch ruler you get these at
Hobby Lobby and Joanne's or Amazon I'm
sure yeah well since hobby lobby's
closed you know I went on the Hobby
Lobby just you can like oh maybe I can
order fabric on there because it was
very difficult to order fabric on Joey
and everything I don't know if they put
everything out of stock or if literally
people have bought it all cut their
stores in that club and I don't know if
anybody's actually there to do online
orders yeah I don't know but all their
fabric everything I clicked on set out
of stock and I'm like I can't imagine
but maybe it is okay so I'm just using
this ruler to make sure it's two inches
excess well I think everyone's making
mass so it could blow yeah well see this
they can make them with t-shirts that's
right pretty brilliant
I'm just cutting off this selvage edge
here which is this little fuzzy part
that comes off the bolt now I'm gonna
kind of cuz I don't have like pull this
I'm gonna roll this out and what we are
going to do this is called like you do
this with an actual quilt as well and
this is self binding it where you it's
the same as your backing and you're just
gonna fold it over the edge so I'm gonna
do the sides first and what you want to
do is just fold the edge you're gonna
fold the edge to the edge of the fabric
and then you're gonna fold it over onto
the fabric so this is super easy but
it's a great way to find a quilt and/or
table runner cuz then it's all nice and
finished and then you've got like a
little decorative trim on it depending
on which fabric you use and I'm gonna
try to just so I can get it done evenly
and then do each side and then I'm
working my way up okay and I'm gonna do
the sides first and then we'll come back
and fold the top in the bottom
now I'm going to trim this end a little
bit because I need to get about two
inches and then trim off my selvage edge
real quick and if you're looking for new
dressmaker so there's these are called
this brand is called Chi I you just I
usually like my gear centers but this
brand tie they're very good so if you're
looking for a good parent dressmaker
shears this brands good
okay so now I'm going to do the end that
way I can just sew it all at once you
turn this around and what I'm gonna do
is I'm gonna kind of do this like a
package you like if you're I'm just
pinning this for them hold it
I'm gonna fold these let fold the point
in and bring it down to meet and then
I'm going to take the edge and do like I
just did before and then it will make
this little nice mitered corner and then
once we take it to the Machine we can
just continuously sew it all the way
around
there's one just make sure you keep
smoothing it out just so that quilt
batting doesn't get wrinkled under there
and then I'm taking the corner and
folding it in and then I'll fold this
edge to the edge of the fabric and then
fold it over onto it
these are quick and easy so you can do
these for every holiday which is kind of
fun because there's all those kinds of
cute little holiday prints and I never
know what to do with it so a little
table runners really fun okay
so we have the edges all sew it around I
would start you know you can start at
the center on the bottom and just stitch
all the way around what I'm going to do
on the mitered corners it's what I get
to when I sew here I'm gonna sew up to
the corner and then turn it around and
come back down
just because that has an opening and
then that way it'll keep it flat and
then I'll come back up here and then
we're just gonna sell right along the
edge right here and top stitch that down
now if you want to get super fancy if
your sewing machine has decorative
stitches you can certainly use a
decorative stitch I'm just going to use
a straight stitch cuz I met that thing
and see I guess but you could definitely
add you know some type of additional
detail if you wanted to
and I'm just sewing right along right
inside right near the edge right to the
mitered corner
I'm gonna keep my needle down I'm gonna
swing it in this so out to the point and
then have my needle down raise the
presser foot swing it back around go
back up and then continuing around the
edge that way those little mitered
corners don't have a little opening at
contain your star hop and open
my day is
yes
keep my needle down rich friend and so
up to this point and then come back in
you
and that's it
look so pretty that's how quick and easy
know you can get do that with all kind
of different cute materials okay I like
that what we're gonna have but you know
it's just a little bit of light clothing
you know you can certainly do I've done
other table runners where I pieced
together you know sections you know just
a bigger fabric sisters I just like the
fabric so this is just you know one
continuous piece and then if you wanted
to quilt you know do lines you know
going the other way just to give it some
more texture I just wanted to you know
haven't have a little heavier feel to it
so I just did a little quick quilting to
it I love that yes awesome
and thank you so much for showing us
both of those today oh my welcome thank
you so much for letting me do it of
course y'all make sure you check out her
channel
it's so cute bye Katie just like in the
description s eww a lot of people want
to say s oh that's funny
yep awesome Thank You Katie
alright thank you so much thanks for
watching you guys have Y all stay safe
and give you questions about making
masks uncle just have another thought
you could you know some of the masks we
did a video we're using ties you can
still make the toys out of the t-shirt
too because it actually might be a
little softer yeah
tying it yeah so the t-shirt ties you
know community earpieces or ties or the
other thing is I've had people say
they're mass it's a little tight it's
pulling on their ears you could tie that
between the two loops to kind of make it
you know one continuous piece around
your head like a Halloween mask you know
with the rubber band you know oh yeah
now that you know that way you can
create an extender you know Ryan so it's
that way for tears
yes that would help me drive me crazy
having it around my ears all the time
but yeah yeah just go to the grocery
isn't so bad but yeah if you have to
wear it all day and I'm sure it's
absolutely feels weird and annoying
right
right I agree awesome we all go check
out her channel and I'll be back later
tonight with another cubby so y'all be
watching out and Thank You Katie
Thank You Laurie thanks everyone have a
you later afternoon alright bye
