Anger, frustration, and stress take quite a toll on the liver,
causing resentment and depression. So why not just laugh it all off?
According to Chinese wisdom, the liver ensures smooth flow of energy. Just like in the West how
we say the liver processes toxins, Eastern wisdom tells us that the liver processes
emotional toxins as well. Liver has a hand in processing all emotions, but in particular,
it processes anger. So what falls under the anger umbrella? Well, things like stress, frustration,
irritation, all of these come and coagulate in the liver, creating this built-up pressure.
Chinese wisdom tells us that there are five elements. So within this, you have elements
that overact on the other. Wood overacts on earth just like the roots of a tree will break open
earth. So the liver in this scenario is wood and the spleen-stomach or your digestion
is earth. So when the liver has this pent up energy, especially from anger and emotions,
it kind of becomes like a bully and it attacks the spleen and the stomach, therefore injuring your
digestion. Now our bodies actually give us a sign when the liver has too much pressure—sighing. So
you can think of the liver kind of like a teapot: when there’s too much heat,
too much pressure, the teapot starts to scream. Our bodies do that as well. We might not even
realize it; we might feel stressed out or frustrated and we just start to sigh.
To the liver, laughing is the same as sighing, so if you’re able to laugh a lot, it’s able to
relieve a lot of pressure from the liver. This is why I tell people: if you’re feeling stressed out,
actually one of the best things to do, especially if you’re just feeling
stressed out recently (long-term you might want to get that looked at), but if you’re just feeling,
“You know, I’m a little stressed out today,” you go back, you watch some stand-up comedy,
watch a comedy movie, anything like that that you like, where you will—the key
is that you have to actually laugh out loud. The more that you laugh at loud,
the more that it relieves that pressure on your liver, thereby laughing your stress away.
