How To Let Go in Life | Powerful Zen Story|

Once upon a time, a senior monk and a junior monk were traveling together.
The senior monk had many years of experience, while the junior monk was still relatively new
to their ways. During their journey, they reached a river with a strong current. As they prepared to
cross, they noticed a young and beautiful woman struggling to figure out how to get to the other
side. The woman asked the monks for help, hoping they could carry her across the river.
The two monks exchanged glances, knowing full well that their vows forbade them from touching
a woman. However, without a word, the senior monk walked over to the woman,
gently lifted her onto his shoulders, and carried her across the river.
Once they reached the other side, he sat her down with care,
and continued on his way as if nothing had happened. The junior monk was stunned. He
couldn't believe what he'd just witnessed, but he stayed silent, wrestling with his thoughts.
An hour passed, then another, and after several more hours, the younger monk could no longer hold
his silence. He finally blurted out, as monks, we've taken vows not to touch a woman. How could
you of all people carry her on your shoulders? The senior monk turned to his companion with a calm
expression and replied, brother, I sat her down on the other side of the river hours ago. Why are
you still carrying her? This simple Zen story carries a profound message about the importance
of living in the present moment. Too often, we hold on to the weight of past experiences,
whether they are moments of anger, hurt, or resentment. We carry these burdens long after
the event has passed, allowing them to cloud our thoughts and drain our energy.
Life is full of moments when people may act in ways that hurt or disappoint us, either
intentionally or unintentionally. In these moments, we face a choice. We can either hold
on to the negative emotions that arise, letting them weigh us down, or we can choose to release
them. The act of holding on to anger, regret, or sorrow only keeps us stuck in the past,
preventing us from enjoying the present and moving forward in life. Letting go doesn't mean
we forget what happened or dismiss it as unimportant. Rather, it means that we learn
from our experiences, acknowledge the emotions that arise, and make a conscious decision not to
let those emotions define or control our future. This process of releasing what no longer serves
us is key to living with peace of mind and emotional freedom. When we choose to let go,
we make space for joy, peace, and clarity to enter our lives. The present moment, free from the
burdens of the past, is where true happiness can be found. If we cling too tightly to past hurts,
we lose the opportunity to embrace the beauty of the here and now. Ultimately, life is fleeting,
and the present is all we truly have. By learning to live in the present and letting go of the
unnecessary weight of the past, we allow ourselves to move forward with a heart that is light,
free, and ready to embrace each new moment fully.
