Socrates is renowned for his understanding of the interconnectedness of various philosophical questions. He believed that the problems of knowledge, conduct, and governance are all part of the same problem - how we come to know ourselves and realize our humanity throughout our lives. Socrates developed the dialectical method, also known as the ""Socratic"" method, which involves questioning assumptions and testing them for grounding and implications.

Socrates likened himself to a gadfly, a creature that disrupts and challenges those who are confident in their knowledge. By interrogating them, he aimed to expose the groundlessness of their certainty. This metaphor is derived from Greek mythology, where a gadfly knocked a person off their horse for trying to arrogate divine powers.

While Socrates had training in rhetoric and was familiar with the teachings of the Sophists, he went beyond their methods. His objective was not simply to expose ignorance but to seek truth and ultimately defeat skepticism itself."
