Options that could save you money for health insurance
Oct 21, 2024
Well, it's that time of year again for open enrollment when millions of people
are comparing the benefits to choose health coverage for the next year. And
tonight's affording Atlanta, Jonathan Martin has a look at some options that
could save you money whether you're enrolling through an employer or
Georgia's new state run program. When picking health insurance, the biggest
decision is often whether to choose a high or low deductible plan. The number
one question you should be asking yourself is, did I hit my deductibles in
2024? And how much out of pocket money did I spend in 2024? Financial expert
Ted Jenkins says for most people choosing a high deductible plan with a
lower monthly payment makes sense. But in 2025, if you're going to have a baby,
if you have planned surgeries, the odds are you will hit your deductible and
that can help you make the decision about which plan to choose. If you're
enrolling through your employer, Jenkins says, if you decide to add your spouse
or partner to your plan, consider the cost. One thing you should look into is
to see if your employer charges a spousal surcharge, meaning if your
spouse uses your plan, there's going to be an extra cost. If you choose a high
deductible plan, you can use a health savings account to set aside money from
your paycheck to pay for different medical expenses. Monies go away pre
tax, they grow tax deferred and they come out tax free. For married couples
next year, you'll be able to put away $8,550 pre tax and then you can use the
money this year or you can carry it forward for future years. He says, take
a close look at options for life and disability insurance. It may be cheaper
to buy it through your employer than your own. And with the stock market
rebounding, Jenkins says, look at your 401 K. You may want to reallocate your
money. Finally, don't overlook other health related perks in your coverage
that can save you hundreds of dollars. You may be able to get a free gym
membership. You may get wellness discounts. If you stay healthy, there
may be discounts on even things like pet insurance or your parking and
commuting fees. In Atlanta, Jonathan Martin 11 Alive News.
