Join us for a bouldering session with a twist. We headed for an indoor bouldering session at @theclimbinghangaruk , where you decided my #bouldering session. Circuit board or yoga? Kilter Board or Beastmaker board? Steep Climbing or Technical Slab. You decided. The session turned out really fun and pushed me to consider climbing styles that I don't usually gravitate towards.
It’s been so exciting watching the Hannah Morris Bouldering community grow from the first indoor bouldering sessions at ‘Volume 1’ to a 50k strong community of climbers.
Hannah Morris Bouldering recently hit 50,000 subscribers.
To celebrate we teamed up with our local indoor bouldering gym, The Climbing Hangar,
to bring you an interactive session.
We sent out a series of polls so that you, the viewers, could control my session from afar.
This video was supported by The Climbing Hangar,
which has indoor bouldering walls all over the UK focusing on inclusive climbing,
fun problems and a warm welcome for everyone.
You can check them out via the link in the description

Today we are celebrating. We are at The Climbing Hangar.
We're currently sat in the cafe in front of some sweet treats and a drink.
But today, yeah, we're celebrating 50,000 subscribers, which is pretty cool and exciting.
I decided that today you were going to control my climbing session.
So I put out a few polls on Instagram and YouTube
asking about various different aspects of my climbing session
and you get to decide which ones I go for, starting with my drink.
So we've got a festive special from The Climbing Hangar.
This is a hot chocolate and orange syrup, like a hot chocolate orange drink.
And then we have a banana bread and a mince pie brownie.
I'm going to say I wish for another year of making fun videos.
After we had had a coffee and cake,
the first thing I asked you to vote on was how I should warm up.
Circuit boarding was victorious, which is actually quite fitting
because the circuit board behind me is a brand new circuit board
here at The Climbing Hangar in Sheffield.
And I've not actually tried it yet.
So I'm not typically, as you all know the best at, warming up in general.
But I also don't really warm up by doing anything like endurance or circuity.
So this will be my first try on the circuit board.
So first I've got to decipher the grades,
but I think the green looks like it would be the easiest
and then maybe the purple would be like a good warm up.
I should have bought a sport chalk bag, what are they called?
Sport climbing chalk bag.
I think the greens are straight round and then the purple is like an infinity loop.
So I'm going to try those two now to get myself nice and warm
and then we're going to jump into some projects
that you guys have chosen for me around the gym.
I definitely feel warm.
I feel like whenever I circuit board it really brings out
the glaring hole in my climbing repertoire and I just don't have a circuit board.
But I would say that was a really good warm up.
I'm feeling pretty pumped in my arms.
And now we're going to dive into some projects.
So I asked you guys to pick out a style of project.
A crimpy vert wall, which typically is the kind of project that I would gravitate towards.
It kind of plays into my strengths the most I would say.
Then we've got dynamic and compy.
So that might lend itself quite well to the World Cup circuit here at the Hangar,
which is World Cup style boulders.
Then we've got technical slab, which nobody...
Actually that's gone up quite a lot.
26% of you wanted me on a technical slab,
but I think it's probably good it didn't win
because I'm not a technical slab climber.
And then 30% of you, so the overwhelming majority,
wanted steep and overhung.
So I guess we're going to head to the cave section
and find a steep and overhung boulder for me to try.
After circuit boarding, the idea of like steep overhung climbing on my forearms is like...
I wouldn't pick it.
So we have a few options actually for steep overhanging wall at the Hangar.
We could either go this bit of wall, which I feel is like...
It is steep, but it's not the steepest section of wall.
So I feel like to fulfill our quota of a steep and overhung boulder,
we should probably head around to like the cave section, which is around here.
I actually really like this piece of wall
because it's really good for working weaknesses, I feel.
There's a couple of things on here that I have tried, which I could maybe try again.
But I think what I'm first going to do is do a few easier like flash level grades of climb.
I say flash level, there's no guarantee that I'll flash them.
What I really like about this section of wall in particular
is because it's so long, what they tend to do at the Hangar is put like two starts on something.
So say like this blue, there's an easier start here.
And then if you want to challenge yourself a little bit more,
you can start all the way down here for more of an endurance pump fest.
When I'm doing a steep session,
I generally like to try and warm up my legs a little bit more.
I mean, I've done a few like jumping jacks and stuff,
but I think generally on steeper terrain you're using a lot more like toe hooks, heel hooks.
So like your hamstrings need to be nice and warm.
Well, my hamstrings don't feel too nice and warm,
but that's why I think it's a good idea to start on like lower stuff and then work up.
So I might go for a purple.
So sticking with the theme of steep and overhang,
I'm going to bump up to reds, which are the grade above purple and blue.
Blue, purple, red.
And I'm going to try this red here.
Red at the Hangar is normally like red and white.
So I'd say I like my project grade,
but I do find that when I'm on very steep overhanging stuff at the Hangar,
my grade drops a little.
So I wouldn't be expecting to necessarily climb reds in the cave.
I'll give this one a good go.
It looks quite powerful.
Actually, it looks really powerful.
But then it's got some like crimps and a pocket.
And I quite like a pocket.
So we shall see.
I think if I can get to the headwall and into the pocket, then I might be all right.
But I think getting there might be a bit of a struggle.
I think it's going to be, like with steep stuff I find,
the more you can keep your feet on the better.
And that's what I think maybe like core tension
is something that I struggle with a little.
So I'm thinking these feet here
look like you're really going to have to like dig a toe in to stay on.
Otherwise, you're going to be like flailing around the corner
and losing quite a bit of energy,
which is my default method of climbing.
OK, I have an idea for that.
I don't know if it's the right idea,
but I wonder...
I was just falling a little bit short of the left hand.
I wonder if I could get my toe up into this
and get like a bit of a drop knee on the left to like keep myself into the wall.
Like use my leg as a bit of a like contracting arm.
Something that always stands out to me,
especially on overhang, is I climb so slowly.
Like I really climb quite slowly.
So now that I know my beta
and I've had my first like exploratory go,
I think I can maybe fast forward that a little bit
so that by the time I get to the crux move,
I've got...
I haven't been on the wall for like three minutes already.
Obviously, there's a bit of a payoff between efficiency and precision.
So like I don't want to move too quickly,
but I definitely need to move a little less.
I had a coffee.
I just needed.
It's quite early in the morning
and I'm feeling good.
I'm feeling like I'm gonna get up this red
or at least I'm gonna be brave enough to try the next move
because I think it's one of those where it's within reach
if I commit,
but I'm just like holding a little bit back
because it just feels...
I don't know, it's like an angle change.
It just feels a bit sketchy.
I changed one thing.
I went for a heel instead of a toe.
Which I think did give me a little bit more reach,
but then I...
Well, I didn't undercook.
I like really went for the first go.
Didn't quite get it.
Felt like I might have a little bit left in to go static.
I'm debating.
Here's the debate.
The debate is I need to be able to do like a live pole.
The debate is heel or toe on this scoop
because I feel with heel it feels more solid pulling in
but I reach the end of my reach quite quick
whereas with the toe I can pull in and then step up maybe
and I could do static method toe maybe.
What do you think?
Comment below heel or toe
and then see if you get it right in 10 seconds time.
That one felt less...
That attempt felt less efficient.
Messed up.
There's like a move in the middle.
Let me...
So there's a move in the middle
that's all kind of like around these two holds.
So you've got like a big but slightly sloped toe
and then a tiny little like jib, nib here
and sometimes I foot swap on this and go out
and sometimes I cut through bring my like left foot into here
but when I do that it feels harder to go into the crimp.
Kind of like it's one of those...
I haven't really committed to like any one method
so it's all a bit different each time.
I think I'm gonna...
I think I'm gonna foot swap.
Just felt like a bit insecure.
Like once you caught the pocket maybe you'd like hero move out
which would probably be fine to be fair
because the pocket does look good
unless you've fumbled the pocket which is entirely likely.
Um it's okay.
Um but the toe and the toe and the lock off worked
and I think it would work again.
So I'm gonna have a final go on this
and I'm gonna make a plan before I set off
because um I did think going into the pocket might be all right
but it wasn't.
So I need to figure out whether I want to put a toe or a heel
or like where I want to put my left foot um before I get there
otherwise exactly the same thing is going to happen again.
Um so I think looking at it from the ground
I'm imagining that I'll get matched
I'll go into my crimp
then I will have my right toe behind the x-caught hold
I'll brace with my left foot on the this little dish here
and then I'll go.
Um yeah I'm really glad I tried that the last time.
Um the toe method definitely seemed to unlock it for me
and then with the toe hook around the hold
it was really like it felt what would the word be
like the the the method that I had to do
I had to like find the right body position
I put the toe in it didn't feel like I would be able to release the right hand
but then I put the toe in and like sunk down on my hips
like my right hip really like exaggeratedly sunk that down
I think to straighten my leg out so that the toe hook felt good
and then I just felt able to take my right hand off
um and then the last move was actually quite hard as well
I thought it was like gonna be a jug to finish
but it's actually um a deeper
but still you have to be precise on that pocket
I kind of like went over the top of it
expecting just to put my hand around the back
and like fumbled it a bit because there's a rim around the other side
I'm gonna try this red because it's come on recommendation from Nathan
he said it's his favorite red in the whole of the climbing hangar
so it sounded pretty good
it's on the like not the steepest section of wall at the hangar
but like the second steepest um
and it's on these like lightning bolt like flat edge holds
which I really struggle with actually
this again looks like one of those ones where
keeping your feet on I think it's gonna be quite key
oh my god
these are funny they're like long
but because of that they're like this
because they're veed and that too on the other ones
if you place them wrong then they become quite bad
like if you placed it on the ridge here
they're actually quite a thin surface area
but because you're trying to like twist and turn and push in a direction
I think it's quite important that you place your foot on the right part
it's hard it's very hard
very hard
I find this move out to here quite hard
it's not like I get a toe hook into here
it's not super deep
actually having to use the toe rather than just like decoratively place it
like I normally do with a toe hook
okay
that's just not once I reach a certain point like that's not holding
I'm back to um I'm just gonna try the move in isolation still
because it still feels quite a long way off
and I think I would be really happy if I just caught the move
made my own little side quest project
um I'm gonna play around with hand placement on this
because that seems to be what's going like
maybe they're both
sometimes my left hand's been slipping sometimes my right
but I think my right's been going because my left comes off
and then I'm like 100 trying to pull it back in
also struggling to trust this
I have to really push up on it but I'm worried about it
I swear I'm worried
that's enough of that
I think we're going to move on to some more big moves
because we're going to move on to a board
and do some board climbing
so for the last part of my session I asked you which board I should climb on
so I don't typically board climb
though the hangar does have a selection of boards to choose from
we've got the kilter board which is this one here
and then we have the beast maker board
which I must admit I've actually never climbed on
and I think it's like notoriously difficult
so luckily for me um you picked the kilter board
or 64% of you picked the kilter board
so we're gonna climb on the kilter board
I have I do have the app on my phone because I have climbed on the kilter board before
this one is a fixed at 50 I believe
and if you're not familiar with the kilter board
it's all linked to the kilter board app
which means that um both locally and kind of like globally
there are climbs uploaded into like a database
so you can try like say if you have a 50 degree filter board at your gym
you could set me a problem and then I could light it up here
and we could climb the same climb
on the app you can actually list like undone projects
or like things that you've tried and haven't done
or like mini projects
and I do have one a 6b or like a v4
called welcome to good burger
home of the good burger
the lights lead the way so star is green I think
then you've got yellow is feet only
blue hands and feet
hands and feet
and then the purple one at the top is the finish hold
um so I can't actually remember this
this is on like my project list but
I can't remember having climbed it before
I also I think that the rules of the kilter board are like no matching
but sometimes I do match because
this looks hard
does that count?
before I could peel myself off celebrating does that count?
what I also really like about the kilter board app is
I'm one of those people that likes to like tick things off
and I like having like a log
so that's what I enjoy about this
but I also enjoy it's got a little link through to like Instagram
so you can watch beta videos
because it's standardized
you can watch people like all over the world climbing
welcome to good burger home of good burgers
and maybe we should put this one on
so if you have a kilter board in a gym near you
you could try it
yeah do the problem and then tag us in a video
to say this is the 50k special
or maybe we should set that would take a long time
we could set a 50k special for people to find and try
maybe in another video another video
this is children under the stairs
and it's 7a it's a v6
yeah so if you recommended this on Instagram
and it looked cool
Sophie's quite a bit stronger than I am
so should be interesting to see
but it looks like a big last move
so that brings to an end our session together
or a session where you control my climbing session
I feel like the steep climbing was an excellent choice
the circuit boarding
I want to say I enjoyed it but I didn't
but maybe I just need to do it more
so that it feels less hard
the board climbing was a success
I ticked off a board project
and the coffee and cake was great as always
and yeah I just I wanted to take a moment to say
thank you so much for 50,000 subscribers
and it really it just like boggles my mind
that seven people are following like my climbing journey
and find the content here relatable in some way
so I really hope that you enjoyed this video
