In 1971, Peter Brown published "The World of Late Antiquity", and very quickly established "Late Antiquity" as a historical field in its own right. It examines the breakup of the Western Roman Empire, and the continuation of the Roman Empire in the east, in its Byzantine phase. Late Antiquity is also concerned with the origins and rise of Christianity, Islam, and the continuation of Judaism. Focusing less on military history, Late Antiquity has become well known for exploring social and intellectual history of the Mediterranean World.
