Ellie Carpenter is only 23 years old but it feels like she's been around for a lot longer than that.
She was a former child prodigy of Australian soccer, debuting for the Matildas, the national
team, at the age of only 15. By the age of 16 Ellie had played in an Olympic Games. She's played
soccer in the United States, in Australia and now for Lyon where she plays for the strongest women.
In France, Lyon is my favourite city in France. Now it's not great weather but usually it's
and yeah I love playing for Lyon, one of the best teams in the world for women's football.
She's been powering towards her main objective which has been to play for the Matildas
in the Home World Cup in Australia starting in July. Then last year in May Ellie fell to pieces.
She suffered a devastating knee injury, rupturing her ACL and looked like spending a year on the
sidelines. She's recovered after eight months and she is now fit and ready to go. She's the player
that Sam Kerr has described as irreplaceable for the Matildas. So she is ready to go and very keen.
Yeah it was a good session this morning, first one after the game on the weekend so it was just a
re-entry session and it was nice to be on the pitch. And how's your leg feeling? Yeah feeling
good, my knee's really good. I don't think about it anymore when I play or train so yeah it's just
really nice to be back on the pitch and yeah I guess I don't take anything for granted anymore.
Are you pumped about the World Cup? What are your thoughts about it?
Yeah really excited about the World Cup. It's very close, it's only less than two months away
before we fly back into Australia. So every day in training I'm preparing for that and yeah I'm
very excited.
