We visit the Chilliwack tulip festival, Canada’s second largest tulip festival, in Chilliwack, BC. It is the largest tulip festival on the west coast, too. The Chilliwack tulip festival takes place every April where over 6.5 million tulips bloom alongside fields of daffodils and hyacinth in a spectacular blanket of colour.
Tulips were gifted to Canada as a token of appreciation after it’s role in the liberation of the Netherlands in WWII and for sheltering the Dutch Royal family during that time. The Dutch princess Margariet was born in Canada during WWII, making the Dutch-Canadian relationship even more special. The Netherlands continues to send tulips to Canada each year and they are showcased in the largest tulip festival in the world at Ottawa, Canada each May.

We are on another local outdoor covid friendly adventure. Yes today we are at the Chilliwack
Tulip Festival in Chilliwack BC Canada. It's only about I don't know 30 minutes from our house
so let's go see some tulips.
Welcome to Canada's second largest tulip festival and you might be wondering why are we at the
second largest instead of the largest tulip festival in Canada? Well quite simply we're
on the west coast and that's where the second largest one is. But we're also really really
lucky because it's only April here and this is where the tulips will bloom first. The largest
tulip festival in Canada, arguably the world actually, is in our nation's capital in Ottawa
Ontario which is pretty far from here. It's a six hour flight. Next year in 2022 they'll be
celebrating their massive 70th anniversary for this festival. Be sure to check it out.
So why tulips other than we have clearly lots of space to grow them and massive fields of them look
absolutely gorgeous? Well it turns out that the Netherlands and Canada have a very special bond
that goes all the way back to World War II. Canadian troops were responsible for much of
the liberation of the Netherlands at the end of the world war and so as thanks for our service
the Netherlands gifted Canada a lot of tulips. On top of that the Dutch princess Marguerite
was born here during World War II in our nation's capital of Ottawa so that makes the relationship
between the Netherlands and Canada even more special. She's the only royal to have been born
in Canada. There's even a gift shop. You have to go to the gift shop.
Being around all these tulips just makes you wish you were an Instagrammer doesn't it?
