Small business owners are picking up the pieces on Davis Islands but many are having different experiences, depending on whether or not they had insurance.
Business owners are picking up the pieces on Davis Islands and in many places, but many
are having different experiences depending on whether or not they have insurance for
their company.
Eight on your side, consumer investigator Shannon Behnken joins us with what you need
to know.
Stacey, you're about to see two different businesses.
One that has traditional property and flood insurance, and one that is self-insured.
This is what Tabella Tea Company looked like on Friday, shortly after management was allowed
back on Davis Islands.
And this is what it looks like now.
One day short of a week, the shop is open for business.
And surprisingly, manager Rachel Gasser credits the quick turnaround to not having insurance.
Being self-insured, she says, meant reopening was not held up by the insurance process.
It is controversial, the whole insurance policies, because it's difficult to get that help.
Not having any insurance though, commercial or self-insurance, will mean some businesses
may not survive.
So it is interesting to see what the other shops are doing and how everyone's kind of
coming together through it.
Unfortunately, I don't know if everyone's going to end up staying.
Across the street, the Davis Islands pharmacy is partly open too.
The owner tells me he's too emotional to speak on camera, but says his insurance adjuster
just showed up today.
He says he's thankful he did buy traditional insurance.
Property insurance and flood, but there is so much damage that benefits will likely run
out and he'll still end up paying some out of pocket.
Right because Shannon, these insurance, when you have insurance, they don't, that check
doesn't come immediately.
It does not.
And coming up at five, you're going to hear from another business owner who tells me she
thought she was protected.
She does have insurance, but she found out that she doesn't have the right insurance.
And I'll also have some information on small business disaster loans to help rebuild because
there are a lot of business owners that just don't have insurance.
They're not fortunate enough to be self-insured and they're trying to figure out what to do
next.
There is some help.
