The hierarchy of angels provides a fascinating glimpse into a realm beyond our earthly existence, revealing the divine order and purpose that governs the universe. Each class of angel, from the exalted Seraphim to the faithful guardian angels, plays a vital role in maintaining balance, justice, and sanctity within creation. Their diverse forms and functions highlight the intricate and awe-inspiring design of God's plan, reminding us of the profound connection between the divine and the mortal. In this video, I introduced the Pseudo-Dionysius hierarchy of angels, which consists of nine levels grouped into three orders: Lowest, Middle, and Highest. You'll learn how these angels look and what duties they perform.
Angels are an essential part of Christianity.
Most of us imagine them as human-like creatures with wings on their backs,
helping people and delivering messages from God.
However, angels have a complex hierarchy,
and their duties vary significantly depending on their ranks.
Not all of them serve solely as God's messengers.
Some maintain the balance and order of the cosmos,
control elements and natural phenomena,
or guard sacred spaces.
Their appearance is not always human-like
and can differ greatly from our usual perception of angels.
In this video, I'll introduce the pseudo-Dionysius hierarchy of angels,
which consists of nine levels grouped into three orders,
lowest, middle, and highest.
You'll learn how these angels look and what duties they perform.

Let's get started.
Angels of the lowest order.
The hierarchy begins with the divine creatures known simply as angels.
These beings are typically imagined as human-like with wings,
symbolizing their divine nature and ability to move swiftly between heaven and earth.
Sometimes they appear as radiant beings, shining with divine light.
Despite being the lowest rank, they perform crucial roles,
delivering messages to people.
The Greek word agelos, angel, means messenger,
signifying their role in delivering news from God.
For instance, in Luke 1.19,
the angel Gabriel delivers messages to Zechariah and Mary.
The angel said to him,
I stand in the presence of God and I have been sent to speak to you
and to tell you this good news.
In addition to this, angels also serve as guardians,
protecting people and providing comfort in times of need,
as seen in Psalm 91, 11-12.
In the 8th position are the archangels,
familiar to many due to their similar appearance to regular angels.
However, as higher ranking beings,
the messages they deliver are of greater importance.
Their primary mission is to lead other angels
and engage in battles against evil forces.
The archangel Michael, for example,
leads the heavenly host against Satan in Revelation 12, 7-9.
Then war broke out in heaven.
Michael and his angels fought against the dragon
and the dragon and his angels fought back.
But he was not strong enough and they lost their place in heaven.
The great dragon was hurled down.
He was hurled to the earth and his angels with him.
Archangels are powerful beings capable of defeating even Satan,
emphasizing their critical role in the divine hierarchy.
The lowest order is completed by the principalities,
also known as rulers.
Their appearance is not explicitly described in the Bible,
but they are often depicted similarly to angels and archangels.
Unlike regular angels who guard individuals,
principalities are guardians of nations and cities.
They influence the leadership and spiritual climate of these regions,
guiding rulers towards righteousness or resisting them when they align with evil.
An example is the struggle between angelic forces
and the prince of Persia in Daniel 10.
Then Michael, one of the chief princes,
came to help me because I was detained there with the king of Persia.
In essence, principalities are like angels but with larger responsibilities.
While angels take care of individuals,
principalities must watch over entire cities, nations or regions.
The first angels in the middle order are the powers or authorities.
They have a human-like appearance,
but are often described as warriors wearing helmets, armor and carrying weapons.
Their duty is to oversee the distribution of power among humans,
ensuring it is exercised justly and in accordance with God's will.
Powers are the first angels in the hierarchy,
whose mission is not limited only to helping people or fighting against the forces of evil.
These angels are also responsible for maintaining the balance and order of the cosmos.
They ensure that the laws of nature and the decrees of God are upheld,
keeping the order of the universe intact.
In the fifth position are the virtues.
These angels usually have a radiant appearance,
but can take on human-like forms when interacting with people.
They control elements and natural phenomena,
ensuring the universe operates according to God's will.
Revelation 7.1 describes virtues controlling the winds.
After this, I saw four angels standing at the four corners of the earth,
holding back the four winds of the earth,
to prevent any wind from blowing on the land or on the sea or on any tree.
They can create miracles and provide inspiration and encouragement to people during challenging times,
as seen in Acts 27.23-24.
Last night an angel of the God to whom I belong and whom I serve stood beside me and said,
Do not be afraid, Paul.
You must stand trial before Caesar,
and God has graciously given you the lives of all who sail with you.
The last angels in the middle order are the dominions.
Like other angels of lower and middle orders, they have a human-like appearance.
Dominions supervise other angels
and help maintain the natural order of the universe by enforcing God's laws.
Known as the angels of justice and mercy,
dominions answer the prayers of leaders by providing wisdom and guidance
and encouraging people to seek God's mercy and forgiveness.
An example of their role in justice is the destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah,
where dominions warned the faithful and helped them escape before executing their mission.
Dominions do what is truly best in difficult circumstances,
what is right from God's perspective even if humans may not understand.
Thrones open the list of angels of the higher order and are the first to have an unusual appearance.
Unlike previously mentioned angels who resemble humans,
thrones have a completely distinct form.
They are depicted as immense wheels filled with many eyes
and reside in the part of the cosmos where material forms begin to take shape.
Constantly in God's presence, they chant glories to Him,
dispense divine justice and uphold the cosmic harmony of all universal laws.
They are often seen as the chariots or vehicles that carry God's throne,
symbolizing His presence and movement throughout the universe.
These spiritual beings uphold and support the throne of God,
ensuring that His divine will is executed throughout creation.
In the second place are cherubim.
They are frequently described as having four faces, a man, a lion, an ox and an eagle.
Cherubim possess six wings, which are covered with eyes,
symbolizing their vigilance and omniscience.
Cherubim are often associated with protecting holy places and objects.
In Genesis, they are placed at the east of the Garden of Eden,
with a flaming sword to guard the way to the Tree of Life.
Cherubim play a crucial role as throne bearers,
symbolizing their close proximity to God and their integral part in the divine order.
In Revelation 4-6-9, they are shown around God's throne,
continuously worshiping Him.
Their presence in biblical visions and the temple
underscores their role in maintaining divine order
and executing God's will throughout the cosmos.
Seraphim are the highest order of angels in the celestial hierarchy
and are renowned for their close proximity to God.
They are often called the Burning Ones and described as fiery beings,
representing their burning zeal and pure love for God.
According to the biblical description in Isaiah 6-1-3,
Seraphim have six wings.
Two wings cover their faces, signifying their reverence and humility before God.
Two wings cover their feet, indicating their modesty and respect.
Two wings are used for flying, symbolizing their readiness to act on God's commands.
The primary role of Seraphim is to continuously worship and praise God.
In Isaiah 6-1-3, they are seen around the throne of God,
calling out to each other,
Seraphim also play a role in purification.
In Isaiah 6-6-7, one of the Seraphim touches Isaiah's lips
with a live coal from the altar, cleansing him of his sin.
This act symbolizes their role in purifying and preparing individuals for divine service.
The hierarchy of angels provides a fascinating glimpse into a realm beyond our earthly existence,
revealing the divine order and purpose that governs the universe.
Each class of angel, from the exalted Seraphim to the faithful guardian angels,
plays a vital role in maintaining balance, justice and sanctity within creation.
Their diverse forms and functions highlight the intricate and awe-inspiring design of God's plan,
reminding us of the profound connection between the divine and the mortal.
