Longbow Turkey Hunting

The Ancient Longbow Legacy

Up to my dad this morning, I've got about two hours to hunt, probably about 20 minutes
before daylight, so it's not going to take us long to get where we're going, but looking
forward to going up here and hunting with dad.
After all, he's the one that got me started into this mess long ago with hunting, so I
enjoy getting to hunt with him.
We'll be here in just a few minutes, get set up, and hopefully we'll hear a few gobblers.
I hear that joker playing my whole son of a bird.
Just kind of put him in the blinds and he just talks.
Can you hear that?
Right there in the field.
I believe it is.
Coming across the field.
See him down there?
Right there he is.
Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah.
He's going to come get the gobbler.
Go ahead.
He's going down the hill.
Short one at first.
All right, guys, we've had a big long beard come in over here across the field.
We called to him.
He wouldn't gobble.
He's cut down below us.
He ended up opening up, gobbling twice, way down there.
I called, he gobbled once, and then my dad was looking out the back of the blind again
and seeing what looked like two more turkeys.
Gave him a little call and a response.
Some guys hunting over that other side, so they may be feeling a little pressure.
We're going to go a little old school.
Not a lot of people use this.
It's called a gobbler yelp.
We use it quite a bit in early season.
It can be very effective on toms that's hung up.
Actually, just a real, real long, deep hen yelp is all gobbler yelp is.
We're going to try that and see if we can get any action.
All right, guys, we busted out of the blind.
There was a police car coming down the road with a siren on.
There's a field down below us, and he is gobbling his head off.
I don't think he's going to come up to where we're at.
I left the fan that I made to do this reaping stuff in the truck.
I didn't fool with it because we were blind hunting, but fortunately, dad has a little fan decoy.
It's not ideal, and we found a zip tie.
We're going to try to call him up in this woods.
If not, we're going to get out there and crawl with him, see what happens.
We're going to try to get on him.
He's hot.
Again.
He ain't far.
You see him?
Probably just on the far by.
He might be just over the crest of the hill.
I want word.
He ain't far.
He's over the crest of the hill.
I think I could probably crouch.
Well, me and dad come down from the blind.
We knew we could get on top of this turkey.
Got down here sure enough.
Got in a good position, gobbling like crazy.
We slapped the fan on because we're in some big open fields, so we didn't know if we might have to try to fan him
or just use some cover for me to get across the field.
We was able to cut across the field a good 150 yards.
You could see that log over there, that big old dead log.
He probably wasn't 50 yards past it, I bet, was he, dad?
No.
When he was gobbling.
I mean, he was close.
Yeah.
I was probably within maybe 60 yards of that log.
I noticed he quit gobbling for about the last five minutes before we seen that coyote.
All of a sudden, right where he'd been gobbling, where we was trying to get to,
we see a coyote run directly up from where he was at to that big log, turn and run out this way.
Actually, I think before that, dad, you seen a deer, didn't you?
I saw a deer.
I think Wiley Coyote's probably looking for a meal and hootoot us.
That's just how it goes.
I thought we had a real good opportunity right there.
All right, guys.
We're back in the truck.
It opened up just soon as we got there.
When you watch us on TV, it's just like you guys.
We're not always going to succeed.
We're going to mess up.
A lot of times we're hunting high-pressure birds or even on private property,
multiple other hunters around you.
It's real.
What we do is real, same as you guys.
I just want to thank my dad for inviting me up here and taking me hunting today.
He knows I've been trying to get one of this bow, and he almost made it happen for me, didn't he?
Yeah, we saw him.
We saw the big one.
I heard him gobble a bunch of times.
Well, you know, it's like you said, it's real hunting.
We saw a deer.
It ran out in the direction of the turkey, and then right after we saw the deer, here comes the coyote.
And I guess Billy called the coyote in, and it stopped there,
and decided he didn't like what it saw, and it turned around and went back.
Yeah, because when I seen the coyote, he probably wasn't 50 yards in front of me.
No, and by that time, I guess the turkey saw that, and the hunt was up at that point, I'd say.
I think he'd already passed by the gobbler by the time he got to us.
Yeah, probably.
Like you said, the jig's up.
I've had a good time today, and we're planning on being on the mountain Saturday.
Maybe we'll make it happen.
We've had a lot of close calls, a lot of heartbreaks, but we're just like you guys.
We keep it real.
Sometimes we get them.
Sometimes they get us.
It is real.
We'll see you on the mountain Saturday.
