Given all his unique experiences, it’s no surprise that Sly Stallone has a ton of interesting facts to share with friends and family — here are some of our favorites. Both seasons of The Family Stallone are now streaming on Paramount+.
Now, there's Italians and then Italians.
I mean, Jesus Christ.
Seriously.
It's great to be back and reacquaint yourself with old friends that you haven't seen for a long time,
and you just pick it up. So, as I was saying,
you just, like, eliminate all that time gap and just hit it like you saw him yesterday.
Al, stop hiding.
They're doing a whole movie or something.
So good to see you, man. You look great.
Al Pacino and I crossed paths in 1977 when I wanted to do Paradise Alley with him.
Of course, he was busy being the great actor that he is.
This is so interesting. Like, I feel as though I just jumped into Stonewall.
You did. It's wonderful.
But we stayed in touch all the time, and I have the utmost respect,
and I know eventually it's going to happen.
Can you play an Italian gangster? Can you pull that off?
I don't think I can play it anymore. How do you do it again?
I got a feeling you'll have something.
You keep pulling me back in.
Pulling me back in.
I was not very scholastic, to say the least.
I had a .89 grade point average.
You didn't have a one point something?
No, I didn't have a one point.
But at the very end of the first year, I had a 3.5.
That's amazing. There you go.
That's because we stole the exams.
He was on the fourth floor, so there were some young mountain climbers.
I hired them, so they climbed up the balconies, took the exams, brought them to my room.
I mean, that is wild.
That is wild.
You should write a movie about this.
No, it's just a normal day.
My brother has a gig in Atlantic City.
I haven't been there since I was 14 years old, where I found a toe on the beach.
I don't want to get into that. It was just floating.
Oh, what?
I did find a toe on the beach.
The toe had a Band-Aid on it.
Are you serious?
Can I make this up?
And I'm so happy that you came over.
Me too.
I was thinking back, you have known Sly for now 35 years.
Just as long as you have.
Listen, you were on what? Our first date?
No, the first date.
I was there the night you met.
And first date, like second date. I remember we met at a restaurant.
Right.
I remember vividly the first time I met Jennifer, I was in this dark restaurant with a few people.
And it's you and I, and we've never gone out in Hollywood, really, before.
She came in and, whoa, something happened.
I'll never forget seeing his face when he saw you for the first time.
I witnessed it.
I just felt like this jolt, like, oh, did we just have a minor earthquake or something?
We just hit it off.
It was crazy.
Like, we were inseparable all night.
And remember we went to that club downtown?
That was the third wheel.
You were the third wheel.
But you were a great, lucky third wheel, Kirsten.
I said, why don't we go to a club or something?
She goes, okay, but I'll follow you over.
You know, I just want to be in my own car.
No, he's like, come in the limo.
We're like, oh, we're good.
I've got the Dodge Duster parked out back.
We'll follow you there.
Got it.
So I walk outside and she has this Dodge Duster, primer colored, missing one headlight.
The speedometer didn't work.
The gas gauge didn't work.
And a gas rag hanging out of the back like a Molotov cocktail.
I was like, yeah, because I don't have a gas cap.
Things, as they say, happen when you least expect it.
Nobody knows what life is going to bring.
And then 35 years later, you look at your beautiful family and you realize you're the luckiest son of a bitch in the world.
So everyone wonders how you stay so trim.
This is it.
And this is it.
How'd you like the first day in front of the camera?
I had a great time.
You did?
Yeah.
I was super nervous because it was my first time ever doing it.
And I was thinking, I can't believe this is happening.
It was surreal for me.
I'm looking around and go, that's my daughter.
Hey.
Today was a milestone.
It was.
When my dad gives me compliments about acting, it really just motivates me to keep going forward.
And I realize that I'm doing something that I love.
You know what made it so much more comfortable?
Your crew is so great.
They were so nice and they're so warm.
So I'm glad you took that away that these people around you have their blood and guts and a soul and they're not just there.
You know who really taught me that?
Who?
Dolly Parton.
Really?
The best.
So, Dolly Jr. learned that, okay?
I have to say she blew me off the screen.
You can't have two first. That's it. There's one. That's it.
You get one shot at it and you did it. You succeeded.
That was the biggest compliment you've ever given me, man.
I love all this.
Whiskey, Lula.
Wow, I didn't know you had house guests.
Oh, yeah.
Oh, my God. Great. Good to see you.
You know, I've heard of house pets, but seriously.
Lula and Whiskey, they come to visit me like here in the office, a special day out.
Sometimes I walk them around down by the beach.
They always look at the dogs and the dogs look at them.
Yeah, absolutely.
Come on.
What happens when you drop a steamer here?
So what? You just clean it up.
I'm not worried about it.
Arnold.
My God, what a relationship.
Let me show you around a little bit.
I came into California for the weekend.
And while I'm still going back and forth, I'm in Tulsa, King, Vermont.
So, it's great to be back and then catch up a little bit.
This is the famous Conan sword.
This is it?
Yeah, this is it.
It's 11 pounds.
No, this is not the shoot. This is just a cut.
Show the plate.
Oh, I see.
Show the plate, exactly.
I'm getting Conan lessons.
Chest out.
Even though we were very adversarial when we were younger,
because we were competitive,
it became something we realized we're incredibly alike.
Cut from the same cloth.
Now that is a selfie.
And now I love the guy.
Since Halloween is coming up, I got two pumpkins.
So, I thought it would be funny for us to do it together right here.
Two pumpkin heads do it.
Since you're here.
I've done a lot of extreme things in my life.
I've gone over waterfalls.
I've jumped in front of a tank.
I've done horse stunts.
But I've never done anything quite as extreme and dangerous
as carving a pumpkin with Conan.
No way.
Yes, they do.
Yes!
I'll be done by the time you get the f***ing head off.
Rip your braids off.
There's a reason I play Rambo.
I'm sloppy.
This is the way I write a screenplay.
Just go for it.
No.
That's like my mouth.
Okay, guys.
Turn out the lights.
Let's create drama.
Yeah.
Un-freaking-believable.
Oh, yes.
Absolutely scary.
Thank you, brother.
Absolutely.
Thank you.
Donkey.
Come here, boy.
Hey, don't be an ass.
Walsh Avenue.
Now we're starting to get into the hood a little bit.
See right there?
I got into the fight with the McEwen twins.
Oh, this is funny.
First time we got kicked in the groin right there.
That hurt.
Jim Pomponi lived there.
Jules Versailles.
Betty something.
Is this your house, son?
No.
That one on the right.
Oh.
Right there.
I lived here about seven and a half, eight years.
That was when I started to act.
That's when I started to write a little bit.
When I was in that house, I was kind of a scrawny kid.
I could spend a lot of time alone,
but I would literally put on musical scores,
and I would move around that room, play every part.
Literally, I'd spend hours and hours
just doing these odd routines.
So I realized I was not fit for the normal world.
I was always going to be somewhere in the world
where you had to create your own little universe.
Well, well, well.
Hi.
Can we go inside?
Sure.
Oh, my God.
This is the first door I literally was thrown through.
I'll tell you that story.
My childhood was kind of complicated.
Everyone was trying to make their own way,
so it wasn't your all-American family role model situation
where everyone sort of looked out for one another.
Everyone was kind of like on their own.
This is it.
Is that your bedroom?
Yeah.
Oh, my God.
My brother lived next door.
He was in this other room?
Routinely tortured.
It looks really great.
Much more cheerful.
This is great.
Do you remember it being this nice?
No, mine was not this nice.
Reading my dad's expressions,
I think it's a mix of so many different emotions.
I have to admit, my dad has fought a lot growing up.
He was always Rocky.
Down here is where you came to settle neighborhood disputes.
You'd move the furniture back, and you'd...
Coming into his childhood home has made me realize
I've been completely selfish,
and I should be here with my family.
Rocky started right here.
Hello.
Come on over here, John.
Ugly bastard, that dog.
Bring Lassie and take a seat.
Bring Lassie.
So, Henry, what are you up to, man?
About 5, 6 1⁄2.
There was this movie called Lords of Flatbush,
and there's this one guy playing Butchie,
and his name is Henry Winkler.
I'm gonna do something wonderful with my life,
and I owe it all to you.
We couldn't be more opposite.
Yale graduate intellectual me,
I'm a graduate of What's the Matter, You?
All right, I brought you guys here on this momentous occasion
because I think the house is now sold,
so this is my true farewell.
To California?
To California.
Unbelievable.
Henry Winkler is very important in my life.
I never thought in a million years I would head out west,
and he kind of, like, came to the rescue almost 50 years ago.
First time we landed in L.A.,
my car broke down almost in front of his apartment.
On Sunset Boulevard, you said, I need help.
So we put all of your clothes into my car,
and I drove you to the apartment you rented on El Camino.
Yeah.
I brought him up to my apartment,
and I said, see all this scribbling here?
This is gonna be worth a fortune someday.
I'm gonna sell these as movies.
And I take it to ABC.
And I called you, and I said, here's the good news.
We have sold the script,
but they want to replace the writer.
It's gonna be hard to leave Henry,
and Al, you know, Doppler, all my friends,
especially the pizza joint.
I don't know if I'm ever coming back here again.
It's just kind of bittersweet sad.
Right, I understand.
Moving is pretty traumatic.
Right.
How do we make new friends?
Yeah, right.
Yeah, I wouldn't worry about it.
I do.
This is very frustrating.
He's polite and nice and charming.
It's just too good.
Louie, when's your birthday, son?
50 to 50.
He's an Aquarius.
Aquarius, yeah.
I'm impressed that you know this stuff.
Well, our mother did it.
Okay.
Scarlet got me into star signs.
I had no idea what they were before.
I love Aquariuses.
If you want to really get deep into astrology, ask Sly.
Scarlet was on the cusp of a sign.
He told Jennifer to keep her in so she'd be a Gemini.
That's true.
That's how much he believes it.
You want to talk to someone?
Talk to him.
He's obsessed.
What are you, Aquarius?
I'm a Leo.
Is that a good one?
No.
Yeah.
Their mother's a Leo.
You're waiting for the runner to stumble.
Make a mistake.
Please, give me a reason to go ballistic.
I know the way guys do things when they're young.
When they come over here, everyone's on their good behavior,
but you may have Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde.
I don't want my daughter's heart to ever be broken,
and I want to know that Scarlet is well taken care of,
because being a man, I don't trust men.
I haven't golfed in a long time.
Just stop, please.
Right away with the excuses.
Fuck.
Try to get the balls out.
Rip your hips.
Jesus.
Sorry, guys.
They're all putting helmets on.
I actually taught him golf in the beginning.
I said, after he finished playing polo, hey, how about playing golf?
And he said, no, that's not a cool sport.
And I said, let's go to the driving range and let's see how cool you are.
He couldn't hit a ball.
And from that minute on, he's been playing golf for the last, what, 35 years?
We had our honeymoon on a golf course.
That's so not romantic.
When I'm going to Florida, I want you to feel like you're deserted here.
You're always welcome to come down,
because I think you could use a change, you know what I mean?
Yeah.
Bang, bang.
I loved boxing as a kid.
Little did I know that 25 years later,
boxing would change my entire universe forever,
because boxing is about fighting,
fighting against overwhelming odds.
Guess what?
Welcome to life.
It's us.
Oh, my God, Mr. Carrillo.
I love this guy.
Come over here.
Why don't you have any gloves on?
I see him hitting you, and I don't like it.
I wrote a screenplay called Homefront starring Frank Carrillo.
He was the bad guy.
You got five seconds before I draw your skull into this table
and hand it to the floor.
You understand me?
Wear his heart.
He's as crazy as I am.
A real badass.
Last time I saw you, you were holding your back.
How are you feeling?
I'm still holding my back.
How are you feeling?
I thought I was going to be okay.
I had my back operation,
which is why you should never do your own stunts,
and now I have to have another one this Thursday
because my legs are numb.
That's why I'd like to bounce around in here,
but if you feel like you're going to drop.
You're still moving.
I'm still moving okay, but that's called like movie, movie.
I know, I know.
So they're going to go in and do a little drilling again.
There's something kind of romantic
about doing your own stunts.
There's something very unromantic
about after doing your own stunts.
Here we go again.
It's back operation season.
You really think it's from doing your own stunts?
You know what it is?
I did stupid stuff.
I was directing Expendables,
and like an idiot, I'm doing take 10, take this.
Stone Cold Steve Austin.
I'm not forgetting about doing his one body slam,
and I could actually feel things.
Stone Cold Steve Austin when he got slammed in the wall.
That started it all.
And Steve knew because he had done it too,
and I'll never forget Steve going, oh.
I saw his face. He went like, oh, yeah, yeah, yeah.
I never recovered from Expendables 1.
After that film,
I was literally physically never the same.
So I warn people, don't do your own stunts.
But anyway, if they ever need a remake
of The Hunchback of Notre Dame,
I'm ready.
I wanted to do a surprise for the girls,
so I was thinking, what can I do?
Take them on a tour of the haunts
that my brother and I used to roam in New York City.
Girls, you ready for the tour?
Let's do it!
All right.
This is where it is, honey.
This is where my brother and I lived
in the early 70s for like $80 a month.
This is so fun.
Now, you see this hotel?
Yeah.
That's where your dad worked at the deli
where he got fired.
It was called the Dover Hotel.
Oh, my gosh.
And my step-parents had an apartment there.
Of course, they never let us stay there.
This theater was called the Coronet Baronet Theater.
This is where Rocky premiered on the East Coast.
That afternoon, we went in there,
they had a sneak preview,
and I'm sitting there with your dad,
and people started walking out.
He was devastated, going, oh, my God, it's a failure.
That night, when it opened,
you could hear the cheering out on the street
from inside the theater.
And that's Sly and I in this theater, Rocky.
That was the last moment of anonymity.
Is that the word?
I don't know what the f*** this is.
Anonymity.
Anony-
What's wrong with me?
I think I did get hit too much.
I've been waiting to come to this place.
They must have about 150 pieces.
Growing up, I spent a lot of time alone,
and I started to just draw.
So, I've been painting, my God, 90% of my life.
It's truly a one-man sport,
whereas acting, I need the help of 100 people.
Painting, you're on your own.
This is the purest communication you can have
with your inner thoughts,
just free-flowing, and then eventually, wham,
it comes out as this.
Like a Rorschach almost.
Exactly.
This is 100% you, 100% of Stallone.
A permanent record.
Really, his painting is almost a diary to him,
and if you really look at his art and how it evolves,
I can tell those were really, really hard years
or sad years for him.
The older star, then the fallen star,
and each one is represented by colors.
I can see the happier times, and his art totally changes.
Actually, this one here, this is Scarlet.
Oh, wow, yeah.
Heavy paint, more figurative.
She was so difficult to pin down.
I like this painting, actually.
Well, because I'd like to get out there and start to show it.
I haven't been able to do that.
Well, I've had a few shows,
I had one in Russia, I had one in Germany, Toronto.
So, I just need another venue in America.
But there's a stigma.
If you're not a specialist in one area,
it's kind of hard sometimes to be taken seriously,
and I totally get it.
I totally get it.
I'm skeptical when a singer says,
I want to be an actor.
If you're known for one thing, acting,
right away when you want to become a director,
they go, hmm, but you're really an actor.
Well, the same thing with painting.
And I've always considered that wrong.
It becomes very elitist and protected
by certain vanguard individuals
who think that only a painter can paint,
and he can't do anything else.
