So it's about seven o'clock and I was at the gym and a call came through about a case just down
the road from where I was and this dog just ran past me as I was looking around the area
and I could smell him from about 10 feet away. This must be him. Oh yeah yeah. I don't know if
you can see on the camera he's got really bad wounds around his neck. He has like a, it looks
like spray paint and it's an antibacterial that if people see the dogs on the street have bad wounds
they'll spray this on him before they call us. Hey buddy. Oh man he's in bad shape.
It's getting late in the evening so we just have one rescue officer working right now and
Kunti is on another case in Chalong which is about 40 minutes south of here. I'll just kind of trail
him for the next 40 minutes to an hour and make sure I don't let him out of my sight and then
Kunti will get here with the truck and we'll take him back to the hospital.
He just crawled under this truck here. Hey it's all right. He's really weak and you can see his
breathing's a bit off as well. You can see there's matted blood all over his body but it's all coming
from these wounds around the neck and head. On this side I can see at least two or three
behind the ear there but I think that's actually the worst one behind the neck
and it smells really strong, really strong.
He's in a bad state. All the dogs are starting to come out now. They're very sweet but I just
heard them fighting down the road with some other dogs and I wonder if that's what happened to this
one. Dogs are pretty territorial and they get in fights. One dog gets beat up and then after some
time it can get really nasty and I think we'll see once we get to the hospital. This is going
to be a bad one. The whole neighborhood's kind of come out now. It's remarkable about Thailand.
Anywhere you are people never fail to just appear from nowhere to help you.
All the dogs know who's here. The truck must be really really potent to them because whenever it
comes around they freak out. It's all right. Okay, okay, okay. He doesn't like tea. It's nothing personal I'm sure.
I'm sure he just reeks of dog. So he's on the move again and these guys probably aren't helping either.
No, no, no. Don't go that way.
You can't really see what I'm walking into here. It's okay buddy. It's okay. It's okay.
T's gone to get the truck and we're just walking along.
He's lied down again. T sedated him back there. You just can't risk it especially this late at
night. We can't risk him running into a jungle area. We actually got quite lucky that he stayed
in that really flat open site. The main thing is we just get him in to see a doctor tonight.
You can see now he's asleep. We can get close to him. See a lot of maggots in there and that's the
worst one but that's just one of at least a few. The worst feeling is when a dog has an injury like
that and they get away from us and you know they just have to spend another night in pain, confused.
These guys are legends. Whenever we're out on rescues people always come out and help.
Okay, it's obviously a lot longer than expected and we'd hoped for but
we'll get those wounds taken care of and the road to recovery for him starts tonight.
So I said a few times when we was under the truck that the smell coming up from him was really
strong and I think we're about to find out why. Yeah, that is a lot of maggots.
That's Negesun powder they're putting in. It will kill the maggots and dry them out.
It's not uncommon for dogs to come in with maggot wounds here because the climate and the nature of
the injuries that our vets experience but he's been bitten at least a few dozen times and so
every puncture wound has been infested with maggots. This is going to take some time. He's
been sedated so he isn't in any pain right now but I can't imagine the pain he's been through
in the past days, maybe weeks. It's okay buddy, we're getting there. So we're about an hour,
hour and a half in and all the maggots have been removed so now it's just about sterilizing the
Look at how bad those are. That yellow gooey stuff they're putting on is an antibacterial
ointment. It also helps to keep the wounds moist while they're healing. Almost done buddy. Okay,
so like I said he's sedated so he's not in any pain right now but he's physically just exhausted
and has experienced so much pain over the past several weeks so we're going to take him to ICU
and I think this will probably be the first time in a long time that he'll get a really good rest.
Handsome, what do you think? What do you think? Okay, now you're excited, huh?
Oh hey buddy, the wound looks so good. Yeah. So when he came in this was obviously
the biggest one but he had, I don't know, like a dozen or so wounds. Yeah, there are many wounds
bitten by the other dogs, yeah. Really severe. Were there any other medical complications?
We found the high kidney parameter and we thought that Dargis has a like chronic kidney disease
but when we give the intravenous fluid and recollect the hydration now the kidney is
What's the next step?
Yeah, now we ask our behavior team to come to access his behavior with other dogs as well,
yeah. He was hiding, you know, under a truck and all the dogs that I think did this to him,
they were there waiting for him. It's all right. He's very, very scared. Okay, okay.
