Today we're going to do a goat rumen transplant? Transfer? I don't know what it's called. I've
never done it before, but come hang out with us. I think we've got a sick goat, so we're going to see
if we can fix her up. All right, this is our lovely goat herd. They're all doing really, really well,
but our littlest one, little Miss Boink, she's over there, she is the single baby out of cedar,
this one, and she has just been really off lately. I've checked for worms. I don't see any signs of
worms. I haven't done an actual fecal examination under a microscope. I should probably do that,
but her FAMACHA score looks great. She is acting normally, but she's extremely skinny,
so I've been reading that you can transfer some of the cud out of one animal, a healthy animal,
and put it in one that is not doing so great. So we're going to try that today. It definitely will
not hurt her in any way. I know everybody else is doing really well, so we're going to try that,
and I'll show you what I'm doing, and then we'll kind of, I'll show you her, and hopefully she'll
be doing better. All right, so this is Boinky. We are going to give her some herbal warmer
and some probiotic powder, and then we're going to try to collect some of the cud,
rumen stuff off the other goats and give that to her too. She's just super skinny,
yeah, and I'm not sure what's going on, so I don't know if you have more experience with
skinny goats. She doesn't, like she's behaving pretty normally, maybe a little low energy.
Hello girl, but she's tiny, so we're going to try to make sure that she is getting enough food
and doing what she needs to be doing. All right, let's get her.
So this is apple cider vinegar and our herbal warmer. All right, so to get rumen out of
those goats, I have to find one chewing their cud, which I don't know if any of them are doing
right now, and then I'm going to take some warm water and flush it out of their mouth
and into a bucket, and then I'm going to try to put that in point. So I think we're going to hang
out. It looks like Cedar was chewing her cud a little bit. We're going to see what we can do.
I have no idea if this is going to work. She's watching me. She's super sweet, but she knows
that I do medical things to her. There's no way on earth she would let me get anywhere near her
the book that I was using, it's holistic goat care. Anyway, she mentioned to wear gloves because
the rumen stuff smells bad, and it does, and I forgot gloves. Yep, that's what I'm going for.
All righty, so I got what I wanted from the goats, and now I'm going to give this
to Spoink, and that should help her rumen. If it's off balance or not working correctly,
the good bacteria from this collection should help her system jump start and be all good to go.
So now we're going to go give it to her.
Keeping goats healthy is probably one of the hardest things that we do here
on the farm. It's wintertime, which is usually easier. Usually better parasite load is usually
much less in the winter. Stuff comes up, and so that's where inexperienced, and honestly even
if you have experience, new things come up all the time. So our little goat, I'm not sure what's
going on with her, and so the best I can do is just the best of my ability. She's doing all right
back there. We're going to monitor her and see how she does. We're trying to supplement and give her
a little extra feed in case she's just low goat on the totem pole. She is one of the littlest goats.
So just trying to manage that, keep up with it, but you know, it's not always fun and games,
but we do enjoy these goats. They are so sweet. They're so easy to work with. So even what I
just had to do, sticking, you know, rinsing stuff out of some of their mouths, putting it in the
other ones. Honestly, it would have been so much worse if I was trying to do this with the sheep
or anything like that. I really appreciate the goats. They're a lot of fun. I know goats get
really bad rap, and there are some difficult things about having goats, but overall, I just
love how manageable they are. I can physically manage them and hold them to do the things that
I need to. They're friendly enough to let me come around and be curious about me. Their milk is
really good, and so we really enjoy having these guys. We're a vote for goats, but thanks for
watching. We hope you enjoy, and we will see you next week.
