John Travolta had daughter Ella by his side on the red carpet at the 2024 TCM Classic Film Festival opening night screening of “Pulp Fiction”! He chatted with “Extra’s” Melvin Robert on marking 30 years, how many times he’s re-watched the movie, and that iconic dance scene! He also spoke about missing Bruce Willis, who is battling dementia, at the event and shared his fondest memories with Bruce from making “Pulp Fiction.” Plus, Ella talked about how her dad helps her prep for auditions and the best advice he's given her!
Congratulations, 30 years, 30 years.
Can you believe I can't yet?
I can't because it feels like no time because L.A.
doesn't age really from the time I came here when I was 18 years old till now.
So in some ways, it feels like no time.
And yet it matches the classic kind of vibe that the movie has.
Timeless, you know. So, yeah.
How many times have you watched the film over the last 30 years?
Let's see.
Probably, well, once in Cannes on the twice in Cannes on the big screen
over two different periods of time.
And then I want to say four times.
Yeah. And tonight will be fifth.
And you understand the first time you saw it was when you were 18.
What went through your mind?
Just that I couldn't wait to see the movie and then seeing it.
I mean, obviously it lives up to its historic
nature, and I'm just I was in awe.
I loved it. It's one of my favorite movies, for sure.
Your dad says your dad says you're a film buff.
Do you ever give him critique on his performances?
I don't think there's room for that.
I mean, I never find the need to, but
we're definitely I always go to him for advice on auditions and all of that.
So he's having fun being the off camera actor for her auditions.
It's great. What's the best piece of advice he's giving you?
That's a good.
I think one of them was to, like, use your environment,
like especially for an emotional scene to sort of just really be in the moment
and use things in your environment to sort of just bring you into that reality.
Yeah. Yeah.
So that dance scene is one of the most iconic scenes in movie history.
What was the process like putting that together?
Well, it was interesting because he only wanted to do the twist at first.
And then I said, you know, it's just as cool.
I won twist contest when I was little.
So I'm good with that.
However, there were other there are other novelty
dances like this, the swim and the Batman and the Hitchhiker
that in addition, you could color it with other things.
So he agreed to that and we did.
Of course, last question, Bruce Willis.
I'm sure you miss him on a night like tonight.
I do miss him and I'll always miss him, but he's still here
and his daughter's here to represent him.
Just like my daughter's here to represent me.
And so, you know, Bruce and I go way back.
We did Lucas talking together.
So by the time we did Pulp Fiction, we were a groove, a groove to, you know,
yeah, fondest memory of him in Pulp Fiction.
Probably the scenes we did together when I called him punchy,
you know, and it's like the world watching JT called him punchy
when he's got his whole lineage of, you know, action hero.
It was really fun.
And and even when he had to kill me, you know, on the toilet,
that was really interesting.
Thank you so much.
Nice to see you. Thank you.
Nice to meet you. Thank you.
