Hi, everybody. We're here at the DNC in Chicago, and we're at the famous United Center.
And of course, with me right now is a congressman from Raleigh, North Carolina,
Wiley Nichols. Good of you to join us this hour on NTD. The excitement of your being here
for this time of the DNC, four weeks ago, it wasn't like this. What's generating this
excitement that we're feeling? We've got a whole new reset of the
presidential race right now. People are incredibly excited. And there's hope.
There's hope that we're going to make sure we beat Donald Trump in this next election.
That's what I'm feeling on the ground. I worked for President Obama in 2008. I
traveled all over the country with him. This feels just like 2008.
With Kamala Harris, we've got someone that folks are united in support of here. That's what you're
going to see, Democrats in array all week, because we've got a real chance to make sure Trump never
gets back to the Oval Office. And it's about the issues. Now, we're not talking about Joe Biden's
age. We're talking about specific policy issues. Vice President Harris was with me just a few days
ago in Raleigh, outlining her plans to bring down the cost of housing, to take on folks who are
price gouging at the grocery stores, and helping first-time parents with a $6,000 a year child tax
rate. That's significant. That matters for the people that I serve in Congress.
You are from Raleigh, North Carolina. That's where your constituents are. First of all,
I love Raleigh, North Carolina, right there in the Research Triangle. It's beautiful.
There are a lot of beautiful people there. They're left, they're right, they're conservative,
they're liberal, they're Democrat, Republican. What's your message to America about bringing
America together beyond this political division that we've seen?
That's absolutely the message that I push every day in Congress. I won a Republican seat in the
House, one of just six that we flipped in the last election, because I campaigned
on bringing our country together. I'm a member of the Bipartisan Problem Solvers Caucus,
where I work every week with my Democrat and Republican colleagues to move legislation in
a bipartisan way. That's been my focus. That's what folks want. They want solutions. They want
people going to Washington to get things done. There's only one candidate for president with
a history of getting things done in a bipartisan way. Kamala Harris is part of the Biden-Harris
administration. There's only one candidate who's going to go out there and reach out to every
single American. That's what you're going to see this week from Vice President Harris and others
at the convention, talking about bringing our country together. I certainly think you're going
on the accomplishments over the last four years. I know he's going to be talking about
the bipartisan infrastructure law. He's going to be talking about bringing down the debt through
the Inflation Reduction Act and so many of the other policy wins that we have over the last four
years. That matters for folks. At the end of the day, it's about the economy. What have you done
to help make life easier for folks? What's your hope for America?
My hope is that we elect Kamala Harris and get past the divisiveness that Donald Trump has brought.
There are a lot of Republicans that are out there who are not spewing hate and division.
There are a lot of Nikki Haley supporters who are sick of what they're seeing. I think we're
going to have a message for folks who are alienated by a candidate for president who says
things that my 9- and 11-year-old could never hear. I just want a president who my kids can
look up to and respect, not a convicted felon who's out to protect himself. That's the contrast
we see. What sparked in you this desire to publicly serve America?
Everybody comes to the decision to run for office for different reasons. My father died of cancer
when I was young. Cancer shook our family. We had a healthcare system that just doesn't work
for everyone. We need to strengthen that. That was what got me into running for office,
working on campaigns. I spent 20 years traveling all over the world with President Obama,
Vice President Gore, to help build a better America. I think we've got a lot more work to
do, but it's an amazing challenge and a true honor to be able to be the voice for
the folks I represent in North Carolina's 13th District.
Your father would be proud of you.
Thanks so much.
God bless you.
Thank you.
