Mazda's iconic sports car, the Iconic SP, is about to go into production, and its Wankel rotor engine will be used for more than just as a range extender for electric vehicles. According to a Japanese patent application, the engine will be the main power source for this exquisite sports car.
When initially shown as a concept car in 2023, it appeared that the Iconic SP would have a setup similar to the MX-30 R-EV, which uses a compact rotary engine to power three electric motors. However, according to Best Car Japan, the car's rotary engine will be the main power source.
A recent Vehicle Drive System patent reveals a mild hybrid in which the rotary engine is mounted behind the front axle and connected to a 33-horsepower electric motor, which sends power via a transaxle to a rear-wheel-drive gearbox. This arrangement allows the electric motor to provide additional torque support to the engine at low rpm, and two additional 23-horsepower electric motors drive the front wheels, allowing the car to run in electric-only mode without the need to start the rotor engines.
By combining the MX-30's two 830 cc rotary units, the Iconic SP is expected to deliver a total output of more than 350 hp, making it the most powerful rotary-engine car in Mazda's history. More notably, Mazda has proven that the rotary engine can run on a variety of fuels, including gasoline, biofuels, e-fuels, and even hydrogen, opening up even more possibilities for the future of this sports car.
