Hi everyone, Jamie here and welcome to I Get Food, the channel on YouTube where we show you
all the awesome and diverse food spots in Toronto and the surrounding area. You're probably wondering
where Clark is. Well, he's feeling a bit under the weather and kind of lost his voice. So this week
you have me doing all your voiceovers. Summer is still in full swing and in this video Clark and I
will show you three great spots for gelato. So come and join us, it's time to get food.
Our first stop on this gelato experience is Mzika. The founders of the gelateria hail
from Sicily and Abruzzo, so you know they are both knowledgeable and passionate about this
Italian treat. So our first stop today is at Mzika and the reason why I wanted to come here is because
they make the best gelato when it comes to that traditional Italian style. You can see just how
velvety and silky smooth and dense that gelato is.
I went with the pistachio or pistachio. I don't know, I've heard it pronounced both ways but
I don't know. You guys can let me know in the comments which is the correct way to pronounce
it but I always kind of feel like first time I'm trying out a gelato spot, I like going with the
pistachio because I feel that's a flavor that absolutely gives you a sense of how authentic
and how on point the flavors are. This one definitely has that pistachio nutty taste.
I hear the dark chocolate here is really good as well but the awesome thing about it is they have
a lot of your classic flavors and every now and then they'll do some interesting and creative
limited time flavors as well here at Mzika. So they really are true artisans when it comes to gelato.
Now I'm pretty sure it's not possible but in the off chance you're more of an ice cream person
and aren't as familiar with gelato, there are a few subtle differences. Don't assume it's the
same thing. First of all, gelato has that more silky texture and the reason for it is it's churned
at a lower rate so there is less air, it uses less fat, so there's also less sugar crystals.
I find with gelato, especially if it's made at a proper gelateria,
it's more about the natural flavors and not as much about
a sweet or sugary confectionary experience.
So here at Mzika, they're so awesome and like I said they're really proud of the gelato that
they make and so one of the ones that they absolutely wanted me to try before I left
was the one called the Italia. Now what makes it unique is that it's made with sheep's ricotta.
From a flavor standpoint, yeah it definitely you can taste that sort of ricotta. There's
like a hint of that sourness and when it's mixed with the sweetness, absolutely hits it out of the
ballpark. This is phenomenal stuff here. If you guys are looking for true authentic Italian gelato,
this is the spot that you guys have to come check out.
Okay so the second spot on our gelato tour today is On Third Thought over here just off of Queen
near Bathurst. When you come here, this gelato spot is special because it's not just gelato,
they're a gelato spot and a wine bar. That's right, you can get wine pairings with your gelato here.
The sun is finally out, it's a beautiful day so when you come to On Third Thought,
you can actually sit on their patio, they will serve you there, they will bring your gelato,
bring your wine, you can sip your wine. Great experience here On Third Thought. You can even
maybe do a little bit of people watching but no worries if you're just here for a quick scoop,
then just head on in and take a look at all the wonderful different kinds of gelato that they have.
Hi guys, welcome to On Third Thought gelato and wine bar. We make all of our gelato fresh in
house every single day and we're so excited you're here. Come check it out. Gelato is
wonderful on a hot day but getting to have some wine with it on this patio makes it extra special.
So the first flavors that I would start with would be the Sauvignon Blanc with our Tiger Lily.
So Tiger Lily is part of the activation that we're doing with Victor and Rolf to celebrate
their newest fragrance Tiger Lily. So you guys actually get a sample of that perfume today
but to kind of explain to you what it is, it's mango, coconut, candied orange and a little bit
of strawberry. It's great to experience hearing how each of the flavors of gelato and wine were paired.
So I'm trying out the Tiger Lily. Let's take a bite. Okay, first of tropical flavor. Mango, coconut.
Oh, I think I just bit into some candied orange. Let me take another bite.
Very, very creamy. So now I'm going to pair it with this white wine. It really enhances
the coconut flavor. This one's our Italian cherry vanilla. I love that burst of cherry flavor.
So one of the great things about the gelatos here is that they're conscious of different
dietary needs as well. This is allergen free. So there's no nuts and things like that. So if
you've got somebody in your group or in your family that can't do nuts or you can't do nuts
yourself, then you're covered there. They're also vegan friendly. Everything on the menu
is vegan friendly. But there's absolutely no loss in the flavors at all either.
When you're thinking of gelato, make sure your first thought is on Third Fly.
The owners of Frichera Granita and Gelato love this treat so much that they journeyed to Bologna,
Italy to study the art of making granita and gelato at the Capparciani Gelato University.
Yeah, that's a thing. And you'll note it right away when you taste the quality of their treats.
So the last stop on our gelato tour today, the top three gelato spots in Toronto has got to be
Frichera Granita and Gelato. Take a look at this. What I have here is actually a mix with the
granita and the gelato. The difference being that the granita is completely dairy free. And I think
when it comes to fruit flavors, the granita is the way to go. And this one here is cantaloupe.
It was the one that was recommended by the staff here. Let's give this a taste.
Perfect melon flavor. Absolutely on point with the flavor. Spot on. If you guys are following
any of my Japan stuff, then you guys know that I really love melons and that Hokkaido melon.
And this kind of reminds me of that taste.
Now, this is a gelato tour, so we paired it with the sweet cream gelato.
And again, like what makes gelato special is the texture. It's velvety, it's silky. This is very
dense. You know, unlike ice cream, which is a bit more airy, that gelato just has that rich,
silky texture. And when you pair that with the granita all in one bite.
That is a perfect frozen treat for a hot day like today.
All right, there you have it. Three great spots for gelato and frozen treats here in the city.
