Peter Heather's "The Fall of the Roman Empire: A New History of Rome & the barbarians" was published in 2005, and remains one of the key counter arguments to Peter Brown and the Late Antique school of Roman Studies. His argument is fairly straightforward--the barbarians didn't deliberately end the Roman Empire, it was more an accidental destruction. Despite the flaws in the book, it remains required reading.
