The University of Cambridge was officially founded in 1209 and is the fourth oldest university in the world. Its earliest college was St. Peter's College, founded by Hugh Balsham, Bishop of Ely, in 1284. Over the next few hundred years, the University of Cambridge established a total of 31 colleges.

The University of Cambridge belongs to the Russell Group, a world-class university alliance, and is collectively known as "Oxbridge" with the University of Oxford; it belongs to the "G5 Super Elite University" with the London School of Economics and Political Science, University College London, Oxford University, and Imperial College London, and is also a member of the Global University Presidents Forum.

The university has outstanding teaching and research strengths and is a leader in many disciplines. Its alumni include many Nobel Prize winners, heads of state, and Olympic medalists.
