Once among the most powerful states in the world, The Songhai Empire, ruled by the Sonni Ali Dynasty, succeeded by the Askia Muhammad Dynasty, was known to be one of the most prominent, prosperous, and largest pre-colonial African Kingdom that emerged in West Africa.
