Cuộc sống bộn bề khó khăn những năm bao cấp đã khiến ngôi nhà ông bao phen trước nguy cơ đổ sập. Nhưng bằng niềm tin vào các giá trị đạo đức truyền thống, các con ông đã dần phục hồi được nếp xưa, và để mái nhà được trường tồn. Truyện phim là cái nhìn rất trực diện vào những khuyết tật của hình thái xã hội quan liêu bao cấp ở Việt Nam.
Series was adapted from two of the most famous novels in Vietnam in the 1980s.
The story of a family with many generations living together in a large house in Hanoi's Old Quarter in the early 1980s. Their fate is also the living of an entire nation facing unpredictable challenges of the new era. That was a period of serious political, economic and especially cultural crisis in Vietnamese society. Everyone has to find a way to survive in a "house" that is too narrow both mentally and physically. That's why they have to abandon their moral standards to find any opportunity for themselves. The film director also created a small detail : In the bonsai pot, there is a snail that always climbs from the root to the top, which is the image of a father who has to work hard to take care of the whole family, or the old house.
