Lesley Riddle (1905–1979) performed with the Carter Family for almost five years before they went in different directions, but he remained a life-long friend of the family. Maybelle Carter enjoyed his style of bottleneck guitar picking and credited Riddle for teaching it to her. Riddle memorized black songs and black gospel songs to bring to A.P. Carter to add to the Carter Songbook. The joining of the young African American blues musician and the “first family” of country music had an extraordinary impact on American music. Enjoy!
