The victim of the Tsinghua University poisoning incident, Zhu Ling,
passed away half a year ago.
When everyone was saddened by the death of this infamous woman,
the elderly couple who took care of her
submitted a request to the Supreme People's Procuratorate for an investigation,
and the Supreme Procuratorate also approved the resumption of the investigation.
Will they receive the justice they deserve?
Hello, everyone. I'm Wing Yin.
Welcome to the Qiong An My Ching.
In this series, we will focus on Hong Kong's original cases,
strange cases, and major cases.
Today, I would like to share with you
the Tsinghua University poisoning incident of the 1990s.
Zhu Ling, a victim of the Tsinghua University poisoning incident,
passed away in Beijing on December 22, 2023,
at the age of 50.
At that time, she and her classmates, as well as her brother-in-law,
were the suspects in this case.
But in the end, no one was prosecuted,
and the real culprits were still on the run.
After Zhu Ling passed away,
her in-laws had been silent for several months,
and finally submitted a request to the Supreme Procuratorate
for a re-investigation of this case.
Although everything seems irreversible,
their beloved daughter is no longer with them,
and has experienced so much pain before her death,
the dangerous real culprits may not be brought back to justice.
However, this does not mean that everything they did today is meaningless.
Let's review this case.
Zhu Ling's real name is Zhu Lingling,
but her acquaintances often call her Zhu Ling,
so media reports also call her by this name.
Zhu Ling, born on November 24, 1973,
comes from a family of intellectuals in Beijing.
Her father, Wu Chengzhi,
was a senior engineer at the China Earthquake Bureau.
Her mother, Zhu Mingxin,
is the daughter of Zhu Qiming,
a Chinese Communist underground intelligence officer.
The couple also have two daughters.
The eldest daughter, Wu Kim, comes from a father's family.
The second daughter, Zhu Ling,
comes from a mother's family.
Zhu Ling's older sister, Wu Kim,
is a student of the Department of Biological Sciences at Peking University.
She is a very outstanding girl.
Not only does she have good grades,
she can also play the piano, dance ballet, etc.
On April 2, 1989,
Wu Kim, who was in the second year of university,
lost her way with her classmates
Two days later, on April 4,
the police found her body
She was confirmed to have died of an accident.
Zhu Ling's death
was a big blow to her.
She wanted to enter Peking University like her sister.
After high school,
she changed to Peking's other famous
Tsinghua University
and became a student of the Department of Science in 1992.
Zhu Ling learned to play the piano since she was a child.
At the age of 15, she also learned to play the guqin.
After entering university,
she joined Tsinghua University's music team
and became a main member.
I don't know why God
seems to be jealous of Zhu's daughter
and doesn't let them have a good life.
Just when Zhu Ling was enjoying her university life,
in October 1994,
she had two temporary blindness
and a few days of blurred vision,
but no diagnosis was found.
The bad things are not over yet.
From November 24, 1994,
Zhu Ling began to show strange symptoms.
She has a stomachache,
stomach discomfort, and insomnia.
She even lost her hair.
This strong girl
was still in good health.
On the evening of November 11,
she joined the Tsinghua Music Team
in Beijing Music Hall's special performance
to play the Guqin solo in Guangling Mountain.
I don't know how she survived
that time.
After the performance,
Zhu Ling's hair was all gone.
She went to the Beijing Children's Hospital
during her stay in the hospital
she was given nutritional supplements and Chinese medicine
which helped her recover from her illness
and gave birth to her hair
However, no one was able to find out
what caused her to fall ill
After her check-up, she went back to university on February 20
But within a week
she had severe pain in her legs
On March 6, Julien's condition worsened
Not only was her leg pain severe
but she also felt dizzy
Her leg was so painful that she could not touch any objects
This illness was more serious than the last time
and it developed very quickly
She also suffered from pain in her waist
On March 9
her parents took Julien to a neurosurgeon in Hsieh Ho Hospital
After Professor Lee Shun-Wei saw Julien's symptoms
he said that it was too similar to
one of Tsinghua University's serious poison cases
He described Julien's condition as
Her limbs could not be touched
Her toes and soles were red
and swollen
Her temperature was high
Under her toes and soles
she felt numb
Her soles were symmetrical
Her legs and eyes were low
She was highly suspected of having a metal toxin
such as tarpeh
In order to make a more accurate diagnosis
Professor Lee Shun-Wei
contacted Professor Zhang Shou-Lin
of the Laboratory of Chinese Medical Sciences
and asked her to diagnose Julien
After the diagnosis
Zhang Shou-Lin suspected that Julien was
a acute tar or metal toxin
However, Julien and her parents
and Tsinghua University
all denied that Julien had been infected with tar
In addition, Hsieh Ho Hospital claimed
that they did not test her organs
Therefore, Julien did not do this test
Julien's condition worsened
On March 28
Julien entered the ICU
She had to rely on a respirator to breathe
During this time, the hospital conducted multiple tests for her
but did not measure her body
Because Hsieh Ho Hospital had ruled out that she was infected
they could only look for the cause of the disease
After this, Julien was in a coma for 5 months
until she woke up on August 31
After the news of Julien's illness spread
her high school classmate, Bei Zhicheng
visited her in the hospital
They did not see each other for a while
They only saw Julien, who was originally in good health
Now she can only sleep in the hospital bed
Bei Zhicheng felt very sad
He decided to help this poor classmate
Back in the 90s
the Internet was not popular yet
Chinese people may have heard of the Internet
but not everyone can surf the Internet
Bei Zhicheng was helped by another classmate, Tsai Chun-hsing
They translated Julien's medical history, related tests
Hsieh Ho Hospital's diagnosis and treatment measures
into English
Through the Internet in North Carolina
to the SCI.net of USENET
and other relevant news groups
to ask for help
I didn't expect to get a reply so quickly
At that time, a Chinese student, Dr. Li Xin
who was admitted to the University of California
and Dr. John, a doctor from the U.S. Embassy in China
helped to create the UCLA-Julien-Tar-Infection
Long-Distance Treatment Network
Let medical experts from all over the world
understand the progress of Julien's disease
They received more than 2,000 emails from 18 countries and regions
Most of the emails reported that Julien's disease
was caused by his poisoning
After all this time, what is he?
He is a chemical drug
The chemical code is T.L.
It is often used as a drug to kill rats, bugs, and ants
It is also widely used in electronics, military, aerospace
chemical engineering, biotechnology, telecommunications, etc.
T.L. is one of the compounds
It is generally a colorless, odorless solvent
It is used in water to form atavit
It was not easy to detect the cause of the disease
Dr. Li Xin and a group of classmates
sorted the emails and translated them
and sent them to the Hiep Ho Hospital
at the entrance of Chung Cheng Kam Wu District for the doctor's reference
Who knew that the head of the ICU at that time
refused to carry out a further heavy metal poisoning test
Bei Zhicheng also tried to send a data machine to Hiep Ho Hospital
so that they could communicate with doctors overseas
but failed
The hospital's inaction
made Julien's relatives and friends very sad
Later, Julien's parents learned that
Professor Chen Zhenyang from Beijing Labor and Health Research Institute
could make him poisoned
and asked the hospital to provide a sample for his daughter
to be sent for testing
He was also rejected
Fortunately, there was a good doctor at Hiep Ho Hospital
With his help
they were able to get Julien's
brain, blood, nails, and hair
to be sent for testing
The test results were shocking
The amount of tar in Julien's body
was actually 1,800 times higher than that of a healthy person
Professor Chen Zhenyang thought
Julien had been poisoned twice
and suspected that someone had poisoned him
At the same time, he suggested using Polosilam to detoxify
Hiep Ho Hospital didn't know what they were doing
They didn't want to measure his dose
and didn't follow the suggested treatment method after he was diagnosed
On April 28, the hospital prepared to use
E. coli
which is a detoxifying agent for heavy metal poisoning
In fact, it is not a detoxifying agent for him
but has a very strong side effect
Until May 3
Looking back
Actually, on March 9
Professor Lee Soon-kwai and Professor Cheung So-lam
had already stated that Julien suspected that he had been poisoned
but no one cared
It took more than 50 days
before Julien was able to accept the treatment
But it was too late
After the second poisoning
the amount of tar in Julien's body
was much higher than that of a healthy person
As the tar was left in the body for too long
causing his brain nerve to be damaged
his vision was almost completely lost
lung and liver were severely damaged
limbs, speech, and memory functions were lost
His body was in a state of severe paralysis
and his intelligence deteriorated to 7 years old
This not only tormented Julien
but also tormented his parents
For the next 30 years
he was taken care of by his parents
Both of them lost their eldest daughter
Every morning
Julien's parents had to get up at the age of 70
The first thing they did was to clean his airways
polish, clean his gums, and wash his lungs
Then he went to the ER
and fed him breakfast
They also had to help him with his recovery training every day
All of Julien's doctors in the hospital said
if he didn't contact him because of his studies
he would have been poisoned
The second poisoning
Although Julien majored in toxicology
he clearly stated when he woke up
that he didn't contact him
So it's very likely that someone poisoned him
This person must first be able to get him
and also take care of his lifestyle
and stay by his side
so that he has a chance to be poisoned
According to the Public Security Bureau
there are only more than 20 units in Beijing that need to use him and his salt
There are only more than 200 people who can contact him
so the range of suspects is very small
Combining all the conditions
Julien's university classmates and roommates
Xuan Wei became the only suspect
Julien slept in a four-bedroom
In addition to Xuan Wei
the other two roommates were Golda and Wang Qi
The chemistry management of Tsinghua University's laboratory is very strict
Only chemistry has him
Xuan Wei is the only student who can contact him
He and Julien also participate in Tsinghua Music
Julien plays the drum and the zither
Xuan Wei plays the zither
There is reason to suspect that Xuan Wei is jealous of the other party's beauty and talent
and has a chance to perform
so he is determined to be poisoned
However, Xuan Wei denied that he was the murderer
What is strange is that after the case
between April 28 and May 7, 1995
Julien's dormitory was robbed
The missing items are all of Julien's daily necessities
including隱形眼鏡盒, lip balm, shampoo, bath bombs, and water bottles
Two years later, on April 2, 1997
the police took Xuan Wei back and interrogated him for eight hours
This is also his only testimony
However, due to insufficient evidence, Xuan Wei was not arrested
In June 2013, Julien's parents received a letter from the United States
The content of the letter stated
that Julien had been sleeping in the dormitory for more than two years
and the people in the dormitory couldn't help it
so they wanted to drive him out
but they didn't control the amount
and poisoned him purely by accident
However, this case is still unsolved
Bei Zhicheng, Julien, and Julien's family
all believe that Xuan Wei is the murderer
Julien once said
I still treat Xuan Wei as a good friend
No wonder he always sent me coffee when I was resting
Julien's father also shed a tear and said something helpless
It's a long story
but what I know in my heart is very clear
We all know who the murderer is
but we can't do anything to him
because he has a backer
Xuan Wei's grandfather, Xuan Yue Qi
is a great hero of the Cultural Revolution during the Cultural Revolution
He is also one of the founders of China's energy industry
He died at a very young age in China
At the beginning of 2006, due to public pressure
Xuan Wei changed his name to Sik Yan
Later, he emigrated to Australia
In addition to investing in real estate and trading
he also opened a homestay
He and his husband have five properties in common
They like to go swimming, go to bars
ride bicycles to the fish market to buy fresh oysters
and enjoy the lake at the pier
Compared to Julien, who has been sleeping in the hospital bed for 30 years
he is much happier
Julien passed away on December 22, 2023
at the age of 50
Bei Zhicheng felt that what was very familiar
was not that the murderer did not recover
but that Julien was not really saved
He lived for 50 years in such a painful way
He also mourned the ICU director of Hiep Ho Hospital
after the discovery of the misdiagnosis
without any sense of guilt
He also said at the hospital meeting
that this was a Western anti-Chinese force
trying to use this time to stir up the Chinese medical community
Julien's case touched the whole Chinese world
Such an outstanding girl was treated so ruthlessly
Hiep Ho Hospital has been delayed for more than 50 days without a check-up
The director of the hospital immediately thought of her being poisoned
and did not try to treat her
Later, Julien's family repeatedly suggested that she was infected
Hiep Ho did not even give a prescription
After suffering thousands of hardships and finally being diagnosed
the hospital still found all kinds of excuses not to treat her
and delayed the treatment
Is this just a lack of experience or a mistake?
Tsinghua University also had a problem
They did not admit that the school was infected
Later, it was found that a subject was sold early and then changed
After Julien's parents reported the case
before the police came to investigate
the scene was also destroyed
and Julien's belongings were lost
This difficulty is just a coincidence
The police station only brought the case to trial after two years
and only 8 hours
This is not a correct way to handle a case
This is not an unsurpassed case
but a dark incident that the hospital, high school, public security
and even the entire political system
should feel very shameful
If it wasn't for Julien
with the ability of Julien's family
at most a month or even a week
he would have found the truth and cleared Julien's name
If it wasn't for him
he and his sinister family
couldn't have endured this kind of slander
and even changed his name to live abroad
This case should not be difficult to solve
Is it just that the country's system
has made officials and businessmen
have a strong background
and can't bear it?
The inclusion of power
will never find out the truth
which is too heart-rending
When power is greater than law
this is something that everyone can't bear
The society is not fair
and justice cannot be gained
Today, there is Julien
Tomorrow, who will be the victim?
I hope the Supreme Procuratorate will re-investigate
to find out the truth
and give the deceased justice
That's all for today
