Okinawa, formerly known as Ryukyu, is located at the southernmost tip of Japan, between Taiwan and Kyushu. It borders Kagoshima Prefecture in the north, the Pacific Ocean in the east, and the East China Sea in the west. It is the gateway between the Asian continent and the Pacific Ocean. Its northernmost point is Iwo Jima Island, its easternmost point is Kitadaito Island, its southernmost point is Hateruma Island, and its westernmost point is Yonaguni Island. The population of Okinawa Prefecture is about 1.46 million. Naha City, as its capital and largest city, is located on the west coast of the southern part of Okinawa Island.
