Hi everybody, this is Solomon Schmitt from HistoryBytes.com.
Today we're going to talk about Caesar Augustus.
Octavian was born on September 23rd, 63 BC
in Rome, Italy. He was the nephew of Julius Caesar.
During his military career, Caesar took Octavian with him on military
expeditions. Caesar wanted to train Octavian up in
the military so that he could one day take his place
as leader of the Roman army. In order to accomplish this,
Caesar made Octavian his heir. An heir is someone who is going to inherit
something from a family member or friend after they die.
After Julius Caesar was killed in 44 BC, Octavian renamed himself Caesar in honor
of his uncle. He and Mark Antony, who was a close
friend of Julius Caesar, ruled the Roman Republic together for
10 years. However, Octavian eventually realized
that Antony wanted to rule without him. So in 31 BC, Octavian went to war against
Antony and Queen Cleopatra of Egypt in the
Battle of Actium off the coast of Greece. After Octavian won the naval battle, he
returned to Rome as a hero. In 27 BC, Octavian became the first
emperor of the Roman Empire and received the name Caesar Augustus or
Augustus Caesar. Augustus means great or majestic in
Latin, and Caesar was a title taken by many of
the Roman emperors in honor of Julius Caesar.
Caesar Augustus was a popular emperor, and under his rule a time period began
in Roman history called the Pax Romana, which means
Roman peace in Latin. This was the beginning of a relatively
stable and peaceful time in the Roman Empire
that lasted for over 200 years. Caesar Augustus also set up a volunteer
standing Roman army. This meant that people could make their
own choice about becoming a soldier instead of being forced to join the army.
He also founded an ancient type of firefighting company and police force in
Rome. Interestingly, during Caesar Augustus's
reign, Jesus Christ was born in Bethlehem, Judea.
Caesar Augustus was one of the most famous and influential world leaders in
ancient history. Comment below and tell me what you
believe is the most significant fact about Caesar Augustus.
