Ten Disciples of the Buddha (4) Aniruddha & Upali - FGS English Dharma Services
#history #buddhism #Anuruddha
As the saying goes, "All those of the four classes who enter the Sangha shall share the same name of Sakya." The Buddha promoted and practiced equality, and this can be seen by him accepting people from all walks of life as his disciples.
In this fourth episode on the Ten Great Disciples of the Buddha, Venerable You Deng introduces us to Aniruddha, foremost in heavenly vision, and Upali, foremost in upholding precepts.
Aniruddha was the Buddha's cousin and born a prince, but he did not put himself on a pedestal after renouncing. Instead, he was as diligent practitioner. Unfortunately, his diligence cost him his eyesight. What went wrong? And how did he regain his eyesight?
Upali was originally a lowly barber who did not think he was worthy enough to be the Buddha's disciple. What were the causes that enabled him to renounce, and how did he earned respect from others with his cultivation?
