Van Life in Mexico - Fishing Village (Ep - 3)

Pulled into the local Cali Max. Our first, we stopped at the produce stand, but this is our first real grocery walk. Yeah, and remember the un poquito, no. Un poquito espanol. And, you know, we're going to be paying in pesos as well, so it should be okay. Oh yeah, we're going to take y'all with us. Gonna be able to keep getting rid of the gray hair. Nice. Kurt, how much is the cheese? This is like a dollar and fifty. For that big old hunk of cheese. This is like queso. I need one of these. It's a dollar and fifty. Like a pound of mozzarella. All right. Surprisingly, Bud Light was the cheapest beer. Okay, we are at the place where we buy fresh water in Mexico. This one is called Baja Port Water. You buy five gallons at a time, so we're going to check out our pump system now. Water's going. Hey Kurt. Oh, the van got a little dirty. Walking down this little path from our campsite to the beach area down here. Look at these walls. They just took the lava rocks like from the beach and made these walls. They just put a little bit concrete between them, but all it is is the lava rocks off the beach. They did really nice work. They did. Look at that. Isn't that insane? So we're doing a little mini tour around our campsite through these lava rocks. Should have put on our tennis shoes because I'm afraid these rocks would slice our feet up. We'll come better prepared tomorrow. But I've still got a lot to give. So I said hey, don't you wanna come? Come and run away with me. Hey, won't you come? Won't you come? And say by chance, don't you want me? A man who fully understands a sailor's heart. A sailor's heart. You're a born survivor. So I just had the chance to hang out with Chaba for a little bit. And he's a local guy, really super nice guy. And Chaba lives here amongst, I don't know, maybe 10 or 12 houses. But it's kind of like all the community where they're all friends. They all know each other. And there's some lobster and clams and mussels that they will bring by the van if we're interested. And he offered to let me use a fishing pole. He's caught about seven fish today. But these people are just really nice out here. Just unbelievably nice and good people. And it looks like they have a community where they sort of share resources. So, but plenty of good seafood here it looks like. So yeah, it's a simple life, but it's beautiful. So this is our first morning here at this camp, at Don's camp on the coast. And Kurt walked over there on the cliffs and talked to a local fisherman this morning who told him that right now they're catching lobsters and mussels. And if you look over there on that point when the tide's low, that's where they get the clams. So I got a feeling Kurt's going foraging today. And hopefully we have some seafood. Stay tuned. It's been a long hard season. I'm feeling weary to my bones. I guess that's my reason. I packed my bags and now I'm gone. Between the sun and the deep blue sea. Tanned and red, flat out on a beach bed. Working on my fishing skills in a little boat that I'll rent. Ain't got nothing but time to kill. No vacations been more heaven sent. So right there she is baiting up the hook with some mussels that they caught right along the thing. And so the little pool the kids are playing in right there is where they put the fish after they catch. So that's their wet box or their live well if you will. So there's two fish in there. Between the sun and the deep blue sea. My feet in the sand. Green umbrella drink in my hand. Between the sun and the deep blue sea. What do you got there? I got two nice lobsters right here. This is what they were out there in the rocks grabbing yesterday. So they store them up in those little beds up there. But in the paddle boards they go out in the paddle boards they go out and they catch them. They have little traps out there. And so I got these two lobsters for a hundred pesos a piece. And that is five dollars each? Yeah. Well they're about two pound lobsters or huge tails. Yeah. So we're gonna have some yummy dinner. This is two meals really for us. Yeah. So we'll have some lobster with some stuffing and then we'll have lobster macaroni and cheese. Oh nice. With Mexican queso. Nice. It's gonna be good. So what do you. All right so I just whipped up a little fresh lobster mac and cheese. That big hunk of lobster tail. It's got five cheeses in it including fresh cream. Big huge chunks of lobster. So I was about to take the first bite. What do you think Snow? Oh my god that's good. Big old fat chunks of lobster. It's so sweet. Look at that big chunk guys. Oh fresh right out of the sea. Between the sun and the deep blue sea. So the lava brick walls I've decided must be the property boundaries. There you can see an old couple fishing boats. And this looks like some sort of old homestead made out of lava rocks. Roof out of basic plywood. So you can see it's kind of about like a little two room. Place. And this looks like a little processing place where maybe. They smoked some fish or whatever right there. And I think over there on the left they processed them. But yeah this is an old fishing village. I'm guessing maybe that was an old outhouse. But uh. So a lot of small humble houses. But a beautiful area. There are a lot of abandoned buildings out here. And so. Nothing left but the concrete blocks. In a lot of cases the roof is stripped away. I'm assuming they're probably using that for some sort of. You know secondary recycled building material. I see a lot of that around here. I think that's a big bone in the corner there. I'm not sure what that is. Maybe a whale bone or something. Either that or it's a giant. But this looks like sometime. Maybe somebody can tell me. But maybe some time ago this may have even been some kind of. Municipal building. Secretario de Pasca. I'll have to look that up. But a simple village. What a cool place.
