You ever hear the story of the boy who cried wolf? It's a timeless classic.
There once was a boy who always wore a New York Yankees hat. And in 2017, the Yankees came out
hot, lasting farther into the postseason than their rival Boston Red Sox with the help of
baseball's new phenom Aaron Judge, the rookie of the year. This is the year, the boy in the Yankee
hat cried. This is finally the time for the Yankees to win it all. And out the crowds of
opposing teams rushed out to watch, only for the team to end up losing in seven games to Houston.
The very next year, it happened again. With the addition of the 2017 MVP in their lineup
alongside Aaron Judge, the Yankees went back to the postseason. This is the year, he cried.
This is finally the time for the Yankees to win it all, as the crowds of opposing teams rushed
out to watch the Yankees rival Red Sox beat them in four games. 2019, even more wins for the Yankees,
and yet again, outran that boy. This is the year, I'm serious this time. They're actually going all
the way. And the fans of opposing teams just about having it with this boy and the false alarms
figured the third time might be the charm, that maybe he'd be telling the truth this time. So on
they all came out just to watch the Yankees lose to Houston again, with the oldest Chapman smiling
at everyone like it was all a big joke. And so the Yankees have continued doing the same thing,
just with less people expecting anything. 2020 came, then a repeat of 2018 and 2019,
as they'd have their seasons end to Boston and Houston in back-to-back years. 2021 and 2022,
this time getting a combined zero wins against both teams, and they've yet to make the postseason
since. If you needed a fresher of the story of the boy who cried wolf, there you go. And believe it
or not, after taking a year hiatus, that boy with the Yankee hat is back out, yelling louder than
ever. Why? Well, welcome. And if you're not subscribed to this channel yet, don't worry
about doing so. I'll earn your subscription by the end of this video. Just like the Yankees earned
the respect that they had prior to 2004. Not that everyone liked them, most people hated them,
but there was still respect and envy. The Yankees were basically, I'm trying to think
of the best way to describe this, a fascist or communist leader that you don't necessarily like,
but you had to respect out of fear that they'd kill you. That was the Yankees. They owned
everyone, including their rival Red Sox, a team that had never beaten them in the postseason.
They really were the golden standard of sports franchises. The Yankees represented the American
way by being winners and accepting nothing less than being the best. Again, that was all through
2003, because then 2004 came around and everything changed. Everything also seemed normal at first,
until 4 of the most shocking days in sports history took place that featured the Red Sox
winning 4 straight games against the Yankees after being down 3-0 in the ALCS, taking them down for
the first time ever in October, winning the pennant, and going on to win their first World
Series championship in 86 years. And since then, nothing's been the same for the Yankees. The Red
Sox have gone on to win 3 more rings compared to the Yankees' 1 ring in 2009, but it's not just
that. The Yankees have become owned by other franchises, including Boston, because in 2018,
the two faced off in the postseason for the first time since the iconic 0-4 series,
only for the Red Sox to win in 4 games. 3 years later, the two faced off in a winner-take-all
wildcard game, Garrett Cole and his $320 million ass took the mound, and what happened? Sox win.
But that's not the worst of it, because then you have the entire state of Texas that owns the
Yankees, more so in particular Houston of course. I mean, the Yankees used to be the bullies of
baseball, the team that was going to usually have the upper hand. But things got to a point where
Astros fans wanted New York more than ever. They loved playing the Yankees, being 4-0 against them
in postseason series, with 3 of those being ALCS matchups. And if you want to take 2017 out of the
equation because of the cheating stuff, ok do that. The Yankees still went on to lose 2 more
times to the Astros in the ALCS, including in 2022 where no time was even wasted, getting
dusted in 4 games. So why am I bringing this up? Why is this even relevant? Does any of it directly
correlate to the 2024 Yankees? Not exactly, but here's why all of this still is relevant, at least
to an extent. The Yankees just recently lost a couple of series, losing 2 out of 3 to the Dodgers
at home, and then a week later losing 2 out of 3 to the Red Sox at Fenway. As bad as stuff like
that looks, especially the latter considering how mid the Red Sox have been this year and really
over the last 3 years, it's nothing to panic about and that's pretty obvious. Aaron Judge is on pace
to hit 87 home runs, Juan Soto couldn't be any better right now, the pitching has been awesome
for the vast majority, and Garrett Cole is about to return. This team is great, that's not what
this is about. These recent series I think are a good reminder that Yankees fans haven't won a
single thing yet. No matter how great their team is right now, this franchise hasn't won a single
thing in almost 15 years. The Yankees as a franchise and their fans pride themselves as
all or nothing, like Derek Jeter would put it. You either win the championship or you're as good as
last place. There's no, oh well at least we made it bullshit, not with the Yankees.
Well, the Yankees haven't even been able to say that since 2009. This team hasn't even made it
to the World Series since that year, let alone won a ring, and with the way I just explain how
things are in New York, the 4 division titles and 10 postseason appearances since 2009 mean nothing.
I mean, think about it, the only thing the Yankees have gotten out of all those recent
playoff appearances is giving other rival teams chances to kick their brains in, as they become
known as a team that's owned by Houston. The last 7 postseason appearances for the Yankees ended in
losing to the Astros or an AL East opponent. The Red Sox twice in the Rays in 2020. I don't
take much of what happened in 2020 as seriously, but if you want to count that one, there you go.
Hell, even the Tigers kinda own the Yankees, considering they took them down in back to
back years in 2011 and 2012, New York couldn't touch them. So, it's basically for the worse
that the Yankees made the postseason all these times since the last time they won it all,
there's absolutely nothing good or positive that's come out of it for them. I've heard
so many times over the years that the late George Steinbrenner would be rolling in his grave,
and yeah, he'd be beyond embarrassed by the last 15 years with the Yankees.
Now the current Yankees, the 2024 team, am I hating on them? Not at all. Again,
they've been incredible this year, a team I've even said might be the best Yankee team I've
ever seen. It's only been 2 months, yes, but just like you, I don't have a crystal ball,
so all I can see is what we've seen so far, which is that they've been amazing and could
get even better. But the way I look at the Yankees right now is the same I and everyone
is looking over at the Dodgers. The Dodgers are of course as good as it gets on paper,
they've been really good as expected and unsurprisingly will probably win the division.
But is anyone crowning them or patting them on the back for how good they've been and for how
talented they are? Hell no, and it's pretty obvious as to why. The Dodgers, like the Yankees,
have made the postseason tons of times over the last many years. The Dodgers have actually made
it the last 11 straight, and it's going to inevitably become 12 with 10 of those last
11 featuring division winning seasons. And the one year they didn't win the division,
they still won 106 games and ended up beating the team that won the division instead of them
in the postseason. So in the end, they basically won the division anyway. I mean, think about that,
that's as dominant as it gets, practically winning your division every year for more than a decade
and only getting better, getting the most talented player ever in history among other things. But
fans understand, especially at this point, that after the countless postseason chokes and failures,
there's nothing to celebrate here with the Dodgers. Not yet. The one championship they've won
since 1988 was in 2020, a 60-game season where no crowds watched until the end when 20% capacity
was allowed in to see the Dodgers beat the Rays in Texas. That year made no sense. The Dodgers
were the best and stood on top in the end, there's no denying that obviously, but there was no parade
to celebrate with the fans, the whole thing just felt kinda fake. So to me, if I were a Dodger fan,
I would be pissed that the only ring I've seen from this team in recent years was the fake 2020
season, rather than 2017. Or 2019. Or 2022, when they won 111 games just to lose in 4 to the 89
win Padres, or when they won 100 more in 2023 just to get swept by the 84 win Diamondbacks.
You gotta win one in a normal year, and so even if you're the Dodgers and they're fans,
you can't brag about really anything until you get that ring. Because what good is all these
regular season teams if you end up choking in the end? Same thing for New York. Especially for New
York. The city that prides itself on being the winningest franchise in all of sports.
Making the playoffs isn't enough. Winning the division isn't enough. Not even making it to
the World Series is enough. Something that they haven't even done in 15 years. Will that change
this year? Well, Juan Soto is a great guy to have, considering he comes through in October and has
never seemed to be afraid of any big moment. If anything, he embraces it and gets even more
confident in those moments. So that's great. The pitching has also stepped it up big time all
around, but no matter how good this team looks or how good any team looks, we've seen how much that
matters in October. So Yankees fans can be happy about the team that they currently have. Absolutely.
And I'll be the first to say that although those two series losses are frustrating, especially to
the Red Sox, this isn't a collapse. At least not yet. This is still arguably the best team in all
baseball. They're dangerous. But they've also proven nothing. And there's nothing they can
prove until the month of October. A month where they'll be able to answer the question,
are you a legit winner with bragging rights? Or are you just another choking Yankee team that
further separates this franchise from the iconic greatness it used to be? If there's one thing to
take away from this video, just remember, the Yankees and their fans cannot brag about a single
thing, especially to Red Sox and Astros fans until they either A, win a World Series, and or beat
Houston or Boston in October. It's been this way since 2018, and that hasn't changed. Let me know
your thoughts, thank you for watching, and I'll see you soon.
