It is said, Johann Sebastian Bach performed the 14 harpsichord concertos from 1730 onwards and finally produced a manuscript collection beginning with the first six solo works as a set with his introductory inscription "J. J." (Jesu Juva, Jesus help) and ending with "Finis. S. D. G (End, Soli Deo gloria).
Bach obviously relished the opportunity to rework concertos for one instrument into another version for a different instrument, much like putting new wine in old bottles or old wine in new bottles. Bach's genius lay in the original melody and harmony, which seemed idiomatic for that particular instrument, but which could be adapted to a new context with changes only in interpretive factors such as phrasing, ornamentation and dynamic adjustments. Although there are virtually no early autograph versions, it is clear that over the next twenty years (1725-45) Bach was constantly engaged in a process of re-examining the music in order to place it in a new light or environment.
