The Kinderszenen op. 15 are a cycle of thirteen short piano pieces written by Robert Schumann in 1838.
The scenes describe childhood, but what what childhood like in 1838?
Part 8:
"The basic instinct of every living thing and of man above all is: to create, to bring forth, to shape something. We do not merely accept the world around us as an object of contemplation, but also want to make something out of it. This urge begins on a small scale and manifests itself on a large scale: in agriculture and trade, in the creation of works of art and in the formation of our living and state conditions. When we have accomplished something and it now stands before us in finished form, which was previously only a plan and will in our minds, we often have the feeling, without realising it, that we have made something out of the things around us; they now contain what we previously only had in mind. Our own realised will looks out at us. So all those who have made a chair out of boards, a figure out of a block of stone, a community or state organisation out of our clear will, are basically filled with the same feeling of great satisfaction. ...
Always regard the child's soul as a sanctuary, and you will discover the guileless and useful basic instincts in his behaviour." (Source: The Housewife's Book, ca. 1880 page 369)
The video was recorded in winter 2024 by Christian Schlegel and edited by Wenjing Ma.
