The Mazda3 debuted in 2003 and has been a popular choice in the compact car market. Its first three generations were also known as Axela in some markets. The following is a re-write of the Mazda3's 20-year journey:

First generation Mazda3 (2003-2008):
In 1999, Mazda began a project to introduce a new hatchback and sedan to replace the old Familia/323/Protegé models. The project was led by chief designer Hideki Suzuki and involved collaboration between Mazda's U.S., German and Japanese design centers. In 2001, Hasip Girgen's design was selected and, after six months of refinement in Hiroshima, production began. The first-generation Mazda3 made its debut at the 60th IAA Automotive Frankfurt Motor Show in 2003 and was launched in Japan a month later. The car quickly became popular as it offered an affordable price, an enjoyable driving experience and premium build quality.

First generation Mazda3 MPS (2006):
In 2006, Mazda launched the Mazda3 MPS (Mazda Performance Series) at the Geneva Motor Show, emphasizing performance. It comes with a limited-slip differential and a powerful 2.3-liter turbocharged engine, the same engine found in the Mazda6 MPS. The car received positive reviews from the media and customers.

Second generation Mazda3 (2008-2013):
The second-generation Mazda3 was launched in 2008, making its debut at the Los Angeles and Bologna auto shows. Although still based on the "C1" architecture, the model has undergone multiple updates during its life cycle, introducing Skyactiv technology and different performance versions. The MPS performance model has also been improved, including ECU adjustments, gear ratio adjustments, improved brakes, suspension improvements, etc., and has once again won widespread praise.

Third generation Mazda3 (2013-2019):
The third-generation Mazda3 was launched in mid-2013, equipped with more complete Skyactiv technology, and broke away from the "C1" platform and switched to a new Skyactiv chassis. It is also the first Mazda model to feature the Kodo design language and introduces innovations such as GVC, Skyactiv transmission and engine. This generation represents Mazda’s commitment to the sustainable Zoom Zoom drive philosophy and multi-solution approach, and is available with a variety of powertrain options, including Skyactiv-CNG and Skyactiv-Hybrid.

Fourth generation Mazda3 (2019-present):
The fourth-generation Mazda3 debuted at the 2018 Los Angeles Auto Show and represents Mazda’s “road to the top” ambitions. This generation is the first Mazda3 to introduce significant visual differences between hatchback and sedan versions. Its eye-catching design has won numerous industry awards, including the 2020 World Automotive Design Show Design of the Year Award. This generation also introduces a new e-Skyactiv X engine, offering superior diesel and petrol performance characteristics.

100th Anniversary Special Edition (2020):
In 2020, Mazda celebrates its 100th anniversary with the launch of a special edition Mazda3, based on range-topping equipment and inspired by Mazda's first passenger car, the R360 Coupe. This limited-edition model stands out with unique design elements, Pearl Snowflake White paint, rich Burgundy interior and iconic badging.

The Mazda3 has played an important role in Mazda's brand image since its launch, with cumulative sales exceeding 6 million units worldwide, making it one of Mazda's most popular models. Its continued evolution and innovation reflect Mazda's commitment to delivering a superior driving experience and safety performance.
