Mazda has ushered in a new generation of SUVs, from the CX-50 to the CX-90, marking the brand's move toward becoming a quasi-luxury brand. For the current CX-5 SUV, Mazda executives have confirmed that a third generation will be launched and is expected to be launched in 2025, but the name may be changed.

According to foreign media "whichcar", Mazda Australia chief Vinesh Bhindi has confirmed plans for the third-generation CX-5, which is expected to be launched sometime in 2025. However, more than the launch date, the car's name has become one of the focal points within Mazda.

Bhindi said it has not yet been determined whether the next-generation CX-5 will retain the current name, but it may be changed to CX-40 or CX-50. Considering Mazda already has the CX-30 and CX-50, the CX-40 might be an option. On the other hand, it is also possible that the well-known car name CX-5 will be directly adopted.

Bhindi believes Mazda does not believe the name change will confuse existing CX-5 owners, as for the CX-8 and CX-9, their successors are the CX-80 and CX-90 respectively.

As for the specific details of the next-generation CX-5, there is no clear word yet, but some believe it may use the platform of the Mazda 3, CX-30 and CX-50, and may be equipped with a 2.5-liter hybrid powertrain derived from the Toyota RAV4.
