Giuseppe Domenico Scarlatti (aka: Domingo Escarlate (Portuguese) or Domingo Escarlatti (Spanish) (1685-1757) was an Italian composer who spent much of his life in the service of the Portuguese and Spanish royal families. He was invited to Lisbon by the then King of Portugal, João Francisco António José Bento Bernardo. The king was so impressed by Scarlatti's talent that he took him into his service. Eight years later, he was invited by the Spanish Crown to Madid to continue to train the Queen in piano playing. He had taught her music when she was Princess of Asturias in Portugal. Fortune favoured him, but Scarlatti destroyed his own fortune by indulging in gambling and squandering all the wealth he had acquired in the royal houses through his talent and skill.
He is chronologically classified as a Baroque composer, although his music was influential in the development of the Classical style.
