China's Ministry of State Security announced on April 26 that starting July 1, 2021, law enforcement officials will have the authority to inspect the mobile phones and other electronic devices of Chinese citizens and foreign tourists.
According to a report on May 9 by Da Ji Yuang, the new regulations stipulate that in "emergency" situations, officials can inspect the contents of individuals' electronic devices with permission from the organization head of the national security agency at the city level or higher, and by presenting their industry card.
The regulations also state that when extracting electronic data at the scene, security officers can take necessary measures to protect the electronic device, including separating it from its owner.
