The rookie sensation, Jared Jones, and it's going to be fun to watch Jones and Skeens back-to-back.
I think that's the coolest part about it, at least for these first couple days for me, is pitching back-to-back with him.
I mean, I've played against him forever, since we were 10 or 11 years old, and I've known who he is.
Nice to be on the same side as him.
Him and Paul Skeens back-to-back as a Pirates fan, it's a really exciting time.
Jared Jones, nothing has affected him so far.
Again, the seven starts at 263.
We are a 52 punch-outs, 41 innings, just five walks, and opponents hitting 184.
And we are ready to roll as the Pirates rock their City Connect uniforms.
Nico Horner is in.
Here's the 0-2.
And that's lifted out to center field.
And Taylor pulls it down.
Horner retired one away.
And now Mike Tuchman will come up.
0-2 from Jared Jones.
Swing and a foul tip struck him out.
99 upstairs.
Two gone.
Here's Bellinger now.
Two down bases empty.
Just getting started.
That's drilled.
Right field.
That's out of its way.
And gone!
Cody Bellinger turns one around.
100-mile-an-hour fastball.
And see you later.
Bellinger in the Cubs' lead, 1-0.
Inside corner.
Bellinger just drops the head on it.
Here's Christopher Murrell batting.
And he'll drive one in the air to center.
Playable.
And Taylor's going to make the catch to end the inning.
Bottom of the first.
Cubs lead 1-0.
Now Javier Azad will go to work.
And the broken bat.
Bouncer to third and dropped.
That's going to be an error.
O'Neal Cruz stepping to the plate.
And a walk here puts two Pirates on, trailing 1-0.
And Rowdy Tellez is the cleanup man tonight.
Wow.
They're loaded for Nick Gonzalez.
Back to the big leagues today.
Opportunity with his first at bat.
And he lines it into center field.
His first at bat.
To give the Pirates the lead.
Nick Gonzalez is back in the big league and back in the bird.
McCutchen, Cruz score.
Pirates lead it 2-1.
Couldn't ask for more than that.
Welcome back to the big leagues.
Nick Gonzalez.
And bases loaded.
You challenge him with a fastball.
Enter third.
About felt high.
There's that short put swing.
We've talked about it since the draft really.
So short and compact.
But a lot of power in that bat.
McMadrigal hitting 217 in 33 games.
And the chopper.
Cruz.
A little trouble.
But he's got that rifle that makes up for it.
And trouble getting the ball out of his glove initially.
And he just guns it over to Tellez.
It's a quick inning for Jared Jones.
There go the Cubs.
1-2-3.
Pirates coming right back up the bat.
Leading 2-1.
3-2.
Two outs man at second.
And a ground ball up the middle.
There's Horner right there behind the base.
Throw to first.
Reynolds is out.
And Assad pitches around the single.
We play two.
It's 2-1 Pirates.
Two walks in the inning now for Jones.
Here's an 0-1.
Bellinger-Holmert his first time up.
Skyes just went out to left.
And right underneath it.
Cewinski.
That ends the inning.
Two walks for Jones.
And two left.
Cewinski the batter.
The 2-2.
Check swing.
Did he go?
Yes he did.
Strike three.
Cewinski trying to check.
Couldn't do it.
Pirates squander a leadoff double.
We go to inning number four.
Two outs.
Christopher Murrell at third.
At first.
It's Happ.
Jared Jones delivers.
Happ runs.
His pitch is driven out to center.
Taylor back on it.
He's got it.
And Jones gets out of it.
Two hits to start.
Two left.
Two outs in the inning.
0-2 on Taylor.
Taylor takes strike three called.
And that's that.
Pittsburgh up 2-1 over the Cubs.
The batter is Nico Horner.
Jones ready.
The 1-0.
And Nico rips one into left field.
That's a base hit.
So Horner with a one-out single.
Here's Cody Bellinger.
Line drive.
And fair ball.
That's going to get into the right field corner.
Nico's on his horse.
Reynolds digging it out.
Nico on his way to the plate.
The throw and a bounce.
And the ball gets away.
Nico is safe.
And it's 2-2.
Grondahl not able to hang on to it.
And the Cubs have evened it up.
He drops the ball.
Horner is out easily.
But Grondahl couldn't hang on.
What a throw from Cruz.
The Pirates' ball into the right field corner.
They use O'Neal as the relay man,
running all the way over from the shortstop position.
Why?
Because he's got that cannon of an arm.
And Grondahl tries to make the one-hand attack.
Had plenty of time to put that bare hand in there
and secure that baseball.
Opted not to and paid for it.
Michael Bush 0 for 2 with a pair of strikeouts.
And that's the other way.
Base hit.
Down the line.
And that one kicks off the sidewall.
Bush will have himself a double easily.
So with one out, the go-ahead run is in scoring position
as Michael Bush goes the other way.
And here is Miguel Amaya.
On the ground right side.
Gets through.
Base hit.
Miguel Amaya in to score as Bush and the Cubs have the lead.
It's 3-2.
And with that good fastball,
he's just able to get on top the other way.
You know, Rowdy's playing off the line.
No chance for him.
But Nick Gonzalez did all he could to try to keep it in the infield.
But just passed.
A little nudge through the right side of the infield
and the Cubs take the lead.
Cody's been right in the middle of the Cubs scoring.
Opportunity to play a little add-on here in the seventh.
Through the right side.
Base hit.
Tachman around second.
On his way to third.
Here's the throw.
Tag.
Safe.
Third hit of the game for Bellinger.
And now two aboard.
So looking for a little insurance with Murrell at the plate.
A 1-1.
Line drive.
Softly hit.
And it'll fall for a base hit.
Tachman coming in to score.
Murrell delivers.
It's an RBI single.
And the Cubs get some insurance.
And it's 4-2.
A little something-something off the end of the bat here from Murrell.
But it gets the job done.
He in half batting now.
You'll want a half.
Line drive.
Fair ball.
That one gets passed to Lez.
Here comes Bellinger around third.
He's in to score.
Murrell will stop at third.
And Ian Happ with the double.
And it's his first extra base hit since April 23rd.
And it supplies the Cubs with a run.
It's 5-2.
Yeah, left-handed Ian has certainly had his struggles this year.
He hits that ball hard.
Cubs nice push here in the seventh.
Well, now first and third, two outs.
Nick Madrigal.
Ground ball.
Base hit.
Right field.
In to score is Happ.
Here comes Bush around.
He's in.
Madrigal to second.
He's in safely.
And the Cubs breaking things open.
It's 7-2.
That's a big hit from Nick Madrigal.
Yeah, big on the scoreboard.
Big for him to come through with a couple of guys in scoring position.
We'll go to the bottom of the ninth.
Cubs lead at 7-2.
Rondall with a double to start the ninth inning.
Pirates need base runners, and that will work.
Here's Michael A. Taylor.
And Taylor is gone.
So, Alzheilei strikes out Michael Taylor.
And here is Andrew McCutcheon.
2-2.
In the air, left field.
Happ back.
Back some more.
Ian leaps.
And he made the catch.
What a grab.
Ian Happ.
Looked like he stole a homer from McCutcheon.
Certainly stole extra bases.
And there's your two-time Gold Glove Award winner.
And robbed a homerun from one of his childhood heroes, Andrew McCutcheon.
Ryan Reynolds the batter.
Pirates now down to their last out.
Got it.
Ball game.
Cubs win.
The Cubs have beaten the Pirates by a score of 7-2.
Good pitching all night by the Cubs staff.
Lots of hitting, 14 base hits,
and a big win in game one of this three-game series.
We'll be right back.
