-Welcome to the Sleep Ranch! We are located in the Northern Black Hills on the South Dakota/ Wyoming border where our ancestors settled and started ranching in 1883.
I (Carson) work alongside my parents, Jeff and Jodi, our ranch hand, Jaques, my wife, Damaris who also works as a nurse in town, and our son Silas! We have friends and family who come along very frequently as well!
We run a cow/calf operation where we summer our cattle on the Black Hills National Forest and winter them in the foothills of the Black Hills. We also have a backgrounding feedlot, and grow alfalfa and grass hay.

good morning everybody another beautiful
day going to get some feed mixed up for
the steers get them fed and the heers
that are in our feed line um usually how
we've been doing it this year is I'm
feeding the cows me and my dad are
feeding the cows and Jock's feeding the
calvs here at the feed lot but he
actually went back to South Africa to
see his family for a little bit so he'll
be gone for a little while so yeah
feeding the calvs which is fun I like
feeding the
calvs first we'll go in with some ground
[Music]
[Music]
hay
next we got some
[Music]
silage this tractor really needs some
Grease
spe
oh
so cing season is really starting to
slow down we've only got about 100 cows
left to C and nine heers so heers have
been coming along little by little
hopefully these nine just have them real
soon but um yeah feels good to be
getting to the end it's been a long
season it's been so nice it actually
hasn't been that bad but it's always
good to be done cing and move on to some
other stuff so do a little cing work
today probably then go do some field
work but I'm going to turn out some he
repairs back out to some pasture here's
some heers that CED
yesterday so they'll be ready to get out
of here and get out to some
pasture come
on let's go
you guys are free hey get
up up up get
up
go come on buddies come on CF go find
your mom she's down there getting a
drink come
on you're free go grow
here we
[Music]
go find your mom
Bud that wild cow at the end of the last
video she actually did end up accepting
her calf we had to leave them in a pen
for a couple of days just so she got
used to him I don't know she was just a
little too wound up so but she did end
up taking him we turned them out faster
they're doing
good since caving is slowing down we're
going to start getting out into the
field and doing some field work so today
I'm going to go do a little bit of
[Music]
disc
[Applause]

hey Uncle Gary how are you good how's
heroing oh it's it's kind of harrowing
yeah yeah I H a couple rocks H get lost
you would wouldn't you yeah all those
Contour things and then you know you go
up a draw and you come back down and
yeah then you go around the hill and
there's another drawing you come back
down and then you follow the Contour
around and then it's like where the
head yeah
so it's quite the mass said somebody up
there on a a a foggy day they they'
never find their way back out again yeah
they get lost up there we got my uncle
Gary here today he's helping us out he's
heroing some cowpie so pretty much he's
driving along with the little tractor in
our Harrow breaks up the cow
pieses I'll probably be doing it
sometime we'll get a video of it but
yeah pretty much just break up the
cowpie spread them out and then they
decompose a lot
faster
doing so I started discing up this this
field that we had into corn last year
what I did yesterday hopefully I'll be
able to just finish her up today but as
you can see our pivot is right in the
way I'm going to switch it on and move
it just a little way it's probably 30 ft
so it's out of the way then I can disc
underneath of it but the reason we're
discing this up um is because we had
corn in here last year you can see
there's still remnants for corn stocks
um the roots are still in the ground so
we just I'm not setting the disc all the
way down I just have it a little
probably 6 to 8 in and just kind of
working up those roots um and just
getting a nice little seed bed we're
going to come back in here we're
actually going to plant an oats and peas
mix um that should you know help the
soil that should help the soil put some
nutrients back in the soil and and it's
going to be some really good feed for
our cows so especially with the
irrigated so far it's been a really dry
dry year so we put some oats and peas on
here we irrigate it we're going to get a
ton of Bales off this oats and peas just
seems to do really good and it's pretty
good feed so yeah working this up you
can see it worked up pretty good then we
don't have these cornstock roots in here
anymore so that's kind of the reason why
we're doing
[Applause]
[Music]
it hi on two
co-pilots lon's awake hey buddy
syus you ready to go ride in the

now right buddy we do you like
tractors you like the
tractor I think he just woke up from a
nap he's usually pretty
T yeah that's pretty cool
huh you see Angus out there running
along you see him over
there hey he's right over there running
with us
uh-huh that's
right looks like we've got the center
pivot moov far enough out of the way
that I can come in here and disc
underneath of it I'll probably ride up
to the tower turn it off disc that
little bit we just keep it
off hey hey hey what are you doing hey
