-Welcome to the Sleep Ranch! We are located in the Northern Black Hills on the South Dakota/ Wyoming border where our ancestors settled and started ranching in 1883.
I (Carson) work alongside my parents, Jeff and Jodi, our ranch hand, Jaques, my wife, Damaris who also works as a nurse in town, and our son Silas! We have friends and family who come along very frequently as well!
We run a cow/calf operation where we summer our cattle on the Black Hills National Forest and winter them in the foothills of the Black Hills. We also have a backgrounding feedlot, and grow alfalfa and grass hay.
Today Jock and I came out to our pasture out in Wyoming where we have our heifers,
where we run our heifers all summer long. We turned them in here a few days ago. This is
kind of just a little holding pasture, it's not very big. So they've been in here a few days,
but today we're going to trail them all the way across the property into the southernmost pasture.
It's probably, I want to say four, five miles. And heifers, they're always a pain in the butt,
so we'll see how it goes. Thankfully it's a beautiful day, it's not too hot.
Cows don't really like to move when it's real hot, so nice breeze. It's probably 65, 70 degrees,
so perfect day for this. Come on girls. Hey. So we're just going to take them up this valley,
then we'll pop up on top of this ridge and keep going until we get through some gates.
Trump's got to poop. Let's go. Hey.
Through the gate. Come on. There you go.
It's going to be a lot of fun moving these heifers. They already are a pain in the butt.
Come on. Hey.
Come on girls. Now the hardest part. Now the hardest part, get them up the hill. Come on
girls. Hey. Come on. Stay on the road, that's easiest. But they won't, they never listen.
At least the roads are a little better since they logged up here. Yeah. Knock on wood.
I got him. Come on. Hey. Come on. You guys are taking the hard way. Hey.
Come on. Come on. I know you like the grass, but we got to keep going.
Come on. So we left about 20 head and a bull in this pasture, and then we're going to take the
rest, which is about 98 the rest of the way. So now we'll have three groups out here. We've got
one that I didn't talk about. There's 90 head in a different pasture, and this group of 98,
and then a group of 20. And that'll have us sitting pretty good. Yeah, no, we don't want to
go down there. Come on. Go back over there. Come on. Come on. Not there yet. Come on. I know it's
not. Hey. Come on. It's almost there. Come on. Almost there. Come on. Go on to your new home.
We're just going to chase them down to the water, make sure they know where that's at.
Come on. Go on. Get down there. Come on. Down to the water. Let's go. Come on. There you go.
Figured it out. Come on. Good job. Finally. Come on. Get a drink, buddy. Looks like it's going to
work. Well, we made it home, and it looks like it did some raining, which is awesome. But thank you
guys for coming along today. Really appreciate it. Hope you're all doing well. We'll see you in the next one.
