Jose Martinez reports on vandalism in one San Francisco neighborhood.
fighting crime, taking steps to clean up the streets of San Francisco. It's all
top of mind for city officials and for people who call the city home. Police
are rolling out a lot of new tools to get that job done and we're gonna have
more on that in just a second. But imagine the inconvenience and the pure
annoyance of waking up to discover a scene like this. Someone just walking
down the street and slashing a whole bunch of tires are Jose Martinez
reports. I'm here in the Richmond district where some residents are
reacting to a vandalism incident reported last night. You see, some of
the tires of those vehicles behind me were slashed in the middle of the
night. Now a suspect has been arrested.
Nearly two dozen people in San Francisco's Richmond district woke up
Wednesday morning to find their tires slashed. A crime that longtime
resident Victoria Gordon finds his random as it is disturbing. I never
heard somebody. Oh yeah, I can see that one over there. No, that's terrible.
Awful. She spoke with us as tow trucks were still picking up the vandalized
cars near 12th and Anza. That's horrible because I live very close. I
live on 14 between Gary and Anza and it's very active. If there's any good
news in this story, it's that police have already made an arrest. 22 year
old Azeal tourists of San Francisco was booked just hours later on 22 counts
of felony vandalism. The motive for it all unclear. Another neighbor who
declined to be on camera told me she found out about the incident because of
the police report on her car's windshield. Victoria has lived here for
more than 50 years and worries that the neighborhood is changing and not for
the better. You see the people who, you know, on any boulevard who are not
clean, you know, um, many times, you know, they do graffiti on the mailboxes,
which I call him. I call 311. Even a quick search on Reddit shows us the
level of desperation in this part of the city opposed to entitled residents of
quite San Francisco neighborhood Richmond say they're traumatized by
break ins and rising crime has hundreds of comments for now. Victoria says she
will keep an eye on her neighbors, has a message for them. And I think, you
know, just sometimes like something get dirty, you clean it up. But San
Francisco is a beautiful place. And Victoria tells me she loves San
Francisco, but she wants to see less crime. She's actually concerned about
the future of this neighborhood.
